Zim to host hockey tourney

HARARE - The Hockey Association of Zimbabwe (Haz) will host this year’s edition of the Africa Cup of Club Champions (ACCC) at Khumalo Hockey Stadium in Bulawayo.

The tournament is scheduled from to be staged on November 22 to 30 in the City of Kings.

Haz vice-president Humphrey Chigwedere said  preparations  to host  the  tournament  are  at  an  advanced  stage .

“A Local Organizing Committee (LOC) headed by David De Swardt (Bulawayo Hockey Board president) has been put in place to assist the Hockey Association of Zimbabwe with the running of the tournament,” he said.

“The LOC has so far met on several occasions to do most of the ground work and we think that we are ready to host the tournament successfully as we did in 2012. We look forward to fly our flag high.”

The event will attract some of the top hockey clubs on the continent which includes Zambia, Malawi, Ghana, South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria and Egypt.

So far 19 teams have confirmed their intention to participate in the tournament.

Teams are set to battle it out in both the ladies and men’s categories, in which Zimbabwe will be represented by Eradicators (Harare Province) and Hippo Valley Hockey Club (Masvingo Province) in the men’s category.

In the women’s section, the country will be represented by Scorpions (Harare Province) and Bulawayo Athletic Club (Matabeleland).

The African Hockey Federation had requested Zimbabwe to once again host the tournament which the country last hosted in 2012 after clubs indicated they were not willing to travel to Nigeria due to fear of the Ebola outbreak in West Africa.
