Zambian choir wows Byo gospel lovers

BULAWAYO - Zambia's Northmead Mega Choir justified why they have been likened to the celebrated Joyous Celebration from South Africa with a moving performance at the Pentecostal Assembly in the City of Kings at the weekend.

Clad in glittering maroon outfits, the 105-member choir performed songs off their red-hot debut album Muli Yesu and left gospel music lovers yearning for more.

Impressed by the tantalising and well-choreographed stage work and melodious voices, Bulawayo fans could not help singing along and cheering on even though many in the audience hardly understood the language in which the songs were performed.

The Lusaka-based outfit demonstrated their versatility by singing in English and a variety of Zambian languages.

Northmead music leader Pastor Boyd Banda told the Daily News that their Zimbabwean tour had surpassed expectations

“Zimbabwe has been awesome. There are wonderful people here and we loved the reception and hospitality extended to us. This is our first time Zimbabwe and next year we are planning to go to New York,” said Banda.

The Northmead Mega Choir added that their tour of Bulawayo was designed to forge closer links with their Zimbabwean counterparts.

“We saw this as an opportunity to extend God’s kingdom and partner with our brothers in Zimbabwe. We believe that God is going to use the church as a beacon of hope and to bring about the change that is desired,” he said.

Northmead Mega Choir, which resulted from the amalgamation of three church choirs, boasts of over 50 songs composed by members of the unusually big choir.

“Our mission is to reach people in all nations. We believe that we are just beginning and God will take us to different dimensions through the power of worship — lives will be changed beyond nations,” he said.

The Zambian choir shared the stage with their equally-impressive hosts — City Pentecostal Assembly Choir.

Obert Santungwana, senior pastor at City Pentecostal Assembly, told the Daily News that both choirs had lived up to expectations.
