Police to arrest political thugs

HARARE - Streched and exasperated police say they will not tolerate any political violence in the country, warning all perpetrators that they will be arrested notwithstanding their political affiliation and standing.

The stark warning was given yesterday as Zanu PF’s factional and succession wars have increasingly turned violent over the past few months.

Police spokesperson senior assistant commissioner Charity Charamba told the Daily News that the police would move to arrest all perpetrators of violence without any equivocation.

“The role of the police is to maintain law and order and when violence occurs we will arrest those involved,” Charamba warned.

She would, however, not shed light on how many arrests had been made to date, in Zanu PF’s deadly infighting.

Many incidents of violence have rocked the party, especially following the divisive and controversial “Meet the People” rallies that were held across the country by First Lady Grace Mugabe last month, and which turned into full-blooded propaganda gatherings against embattled Vice President Joice Mujuru.

During a rally in Mutare, for example, violence spilled out when youths believed to be loyal to beleaguered Zanu PF secretary for administration, Didymus Mutasa, took offence to provocation and underhand manoeuvres by their counterparts from Harare, who were led by the controversial Godwin Gomwe — a fierce Grace ally who has since been voted out of office by his peers.

A Harare victim of the party’s escalating violence claimed that he was attacked with a machete at the rally by the equally controversial former Manicaland provincial executive member Sheila Mutsenhu — of the infamous “birthday suit” politics.

Recently, violence also occurred in Harare where Zanu PF provincial political commissar Shadreck Mashayamombe’s young brother was assaulted. The case is now with the police who are investigating it.

Analysts say the worsening violent infighting within Zanu PF also exposes starkly the blatant lie that it is in fact the opposition that is the source of political violence in Zimbabwe.

It is only in a country like ours that reports of Police arresting political thugs makes headlines. I thought that's what they are there for, to enforce the rule of law and arrest thugs amongst other duties. Or are there other more pressing issues, like collecting bribes at road blocks for example? We would like to know.

Police chief himself is a member of the Mujuru faction. It's interesting now how he is going to handle the crisis within. I can foresee a crisis escalating and that is imminently. I remember not so long ago the police would turn a blind eye when the offender was ZANUPF but were quick and swift if the 'offender' was from the opposition. Perceived offenders from the other faction are going to be arrested. That's how partisan our police and national institutes have become. It's dog eat dog this year.Let the games begin!!!!!!!!How nice it is to be spectator.

What goes around comes around there is the stark naked truth about what Zanu PF supporters are capable of doing when we were victimised in Matabeleland nobody cared ,when they were jubiously recruited as police reservist and armed with FN rifles in the early 80s, they were all happy because it was the Zanu PF stragey to silence us we were silenced by the same trecheary methods that now are pitting ZanuPF and Zanu PF ,we are sitting on the fence or standing in the balcony and watching the dog eat dog scenario, the revolutionary party is drinking its own concortion that it brewed long back for its percieved enemies,Mzilikazi once said "lelizwe liyobuswa zinyoni," what now his words are becoming the same naked truth ,Where are those who called Joshua Nkomo ,stupid and must be hanged, where are those who once said , they will tell the leader R.G.Mugabe that they want a one party state (GUKURAWHUNDI MASSACRE VIDEO 1983-84) I hope they are still alive and are witnessing the consequency of their one party state advocacy.
