Murambatsvina victim: Cde Chinx

HARARE - Liberation war musician Dick “Comrade Chinx” Chingaira has denied that his house was razed during Operation Murambatsvina in 2005.

The veteran musician, who was recently presented with a four-bedroomed house in Mabelreign by the Zimbabwe Music Awards (Zima), said his name was mischievously linked to the exercise which displaced over a million people.

“To the contrary I did not have a house in Kambuzuma. What happened is that these bad guys just created a rumour and it flourished and it was all over the media, Internet and social networks,” said Chinx.

The Roger Confirm singer added that the aim of the misinformation was to create bad blood between the government and war veterans.

“Those guys wanted to create mayhem and to make sure President Robert Mugabe received criticism from ex-combatants. Handina kumboputsirwa imba, ndanga ndisina imba yacho (No house of mine was destroyed because I didn’t have a house in the first place),” he told the Daily News.

“Almost everyone was talking about it. They were saying Chinx had shot down a helicopter, his house has been destroyed, when I was actually drinking beer in some bar (on the said day). I was actually asking for a nice cold Pilsener.”

Comrade Chinx said the house he has just been given by Zima is a fitting reward for his role in the liberation struggle.

“I fought the settler whites coming from the bush. I went back to the rural areas after independence. Then I moved to the high density suburbs and I am happy because that is where I have been all along.

“This (Mabelreign house) is a big promotion for me. I have come to the low density areas or as others say, tave kuma dale dale,” he said.I am not a
