Saurombe on the money at Harare Open

HARARE - Robson Saurombe signed for scintillating six under par 66 to take an overnight lead on day one of the Golden Pilsener Harare Open at Chapman Golf Club yesterday.

The 31-year-old reeled in five birdies and an eagle on the 14th hole to cement his place atop the money table, a massive five strokes ahead of eight players who are in joint second on one under par 71.

Occupying second place is the South African trio of John Bele, Thabang Simon, andThanda Mavundla.

The other quintet in second place includes Zimbabwe’s Steven Ferreira, Gary Thompson, Ignatius Mketekete, Nickson Masunga and Ryan Lang.

Seven players who include Tongo Charamba are a further shot adrift on level par.

Saurombe, a former Hwange Open champion, was naturally delighted to have got his game off to fiery start ahead of the final two rounds of a tournament whose prize fund has been set at $20 000.

“The round was very good. I started well; I dropped the ball well off the tee. The scores just down the way I expected. My tee shots were very good I put myself in positions where I could attack the green and I’m delighted to be where I am,” Saurombe told the Daily News yesterday.

The Mutare-raised golfer said regardless of his five shot lead it was still anyone’s game.

“My season has not been all rosy because I have been putting myself in good positions but failing to convert,” he said.

At three previous Econet events and Open Classic I was in contention only to fall shot in the end. So at this stage I know anything can happen. It’s still anyone’s game, this is just a start. I have to keep focused. I will have to make as many pars as possible if I make a birdie then that’s a bonus.”

Tournament director Michael Mahachi described Saurombe’s six under as fantastic.

"We are excited to have a fantastic score of 6 under. It is also commendable that we have nine players that have shot under par."
