Athienitis Spar mixed doubles serves off

HARARE - The Athirnitis Spar mixed doubles tournament serves off tomorrow at Harare Sports Club with 32 entries taking to the court.

The tournament is part of a series of competitions serving as a build up to next year’s Davis Cup, tournament director Albert Nhamoinesu said yesterday.

Zimbabwe is set to face Herzegovina in the Europe/Africa Zone Group two home showdown in March next year.

“What we want is to stage several tournaments as we build up to the Davis Cup next year.  We want more people to get involved in tennis,” Nhamoinesu said yesterday.

“This tournament in particular is the beginning of trying to get women and men playing together as that is what mixed doubles is all about. Hopefully there will be more players entering next year as we try to promote tennis amongst adults.”

The 32 entries are drawn from various clubs in the Harare Metropolitan mixed doubles League.

Top seeds Chris Chitambara and partner Danai Mapimidze of Parirenyatwa Hospital Tennis Club come into the tournament as favourites given their performances in the Harare Metropolitan mixed doubles league.

However, they face stiff competition from Antony Mangezi and Ropafadzo Manyande of ZRP Tennis Club who have also been on song.
