War vets back Kaukonde

HARARE - War veterans in Mashonaland East have come out in support of Zanu PF provincial chairperson Ray Kaukonde, distancing themselves from the demonstration staged against him in Marondera.

A group of people claiming to be war veterans on Tuesday demonstrated against Kaukonde and marched to Zanu PF offices, denouncing him for being disrespectful to the First Lady Grace Mugabe.

Eric Samunda, the war veteran’s chairperson for Mashonaland East, told the Daily News that none of his members had participated in the demonstrations.

“We recognise Kaukonde as the legitimate chairperson of Zanu PF Mashonaland East province who was constitutionally elected, and we don’t want divisions in the province,” Samunda told the Daily News.

“We don’t know that group of people; they don’t belong to our association. These are people who go for exorcism of evil spirits to Nehoreka and we are not associated with them. Some of them were talking about their welfare. Is Kaukonde responsible for the welfare of the war veterans?

“This group are part of the war veterans that are calling for the ouster of Jabulani Sibanda our leader and they are being sent by Patrick Nyaruwata.

“This is the section that is causing problems in the war veterans’ association.”

Samunda said most of the people who participated in the demonstrations were farmers.

The demonstrators claimed that the Zanu PF legislator for Marondera mobilised youths to disrupt Grace’s rally in Marondera last month.

The demonstrators also denounced Defence minister Sydney Sekeremayi for protecting Kaukonde after advising the war veterans to wait for congress.

Kaukonde has been accused by both President Robert Mugabe and his wife for sponsoring factionalism and being a proxy of vice president Joice Mujuru.

He openly defied Grace at her “meet-the-people” rally in Marondera last month after snubbing a contrived unity pact that the first lady attempted to foist on him at the emotive rally where she again stepped up her thinly-veiled attacks against Mujuru.

Kaukonde flatly refused to bow down to the first lady’s strong arm tactics, including the staged call to come to the podium to enter a unity pact with her.

And just as his wife has done publicly, Mugabe revealed his dislike for Kaukonde, denouncing him before hundreds of youths, women, and war veterans ahead of a tense politburo meeting that was held at the party’s headquarters in Harare last week.

But why is ZANU PF now trying to deal with 2008 ghosts? To what use is firing Kaukonde today? Even if there was bhora musango in 2008, how many times have votes been sold away from ZANU PF through imposition of candidates and intimidation? So is ZANU PF today saying those "who brought back the votes on June 29 2008" should be paid back in the same way Solomon Mujuru is said to have assisted in the elevation of Cde Mugabe in 1977? I am just curious to know? Ndini zvangu CHIPFUKUTO CHIKURU

@reason's handlers must be paying this nincompoop extremely well for him to pore through the Daily News the way he does and to try and rubbish the newspaper as he always does. He must pray that his fellow hyenas in Zanu PF don't turn against him one day the way they have turned against Mujuru as he will then see the importance of this newspaper in Zimbabwe compared to the State Pravda publications.
