Kaseke to appeal UK visa snub

HARARE - Karikoga Kaseke, the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) chief executive, is seeking a meeting with the UK envoy after being denied a visa to attend the World Travel Market Exhibition in the United Kingdom this week.

Kaseke said he would seek audience with the UK Ambassador to Zimbabwe Catriona Laing for clarity on the matter.

This is not the first time that the tourism boss has been denied access to the UK. In 2006, he was also denied a visa for the same event.

The premier exhibition – which will be held in London –  is held annually and provides an opportunity for the global travel trade industry to meet, network, negotiate, conduct business and stay abreast with the latest developments in the travel and tourism industry.

“You have applied for a business visit to attend the UNWTO and World Travel Market from 3-6 November 2014,” read part of a letter written to Kaseke by the UK Home Office.

“However, in light of your association, I consider it undesirable to issue you entry clearance and I am not prepared to exercise discretion in your favour.”

The Home Office expressed doubt over Kaseke’s reason for seeking entry into the UK and the intentions thereof, and also denied him the chance to appeal for the visa.

Last year, Kaseke was also denied entry to participate at the Zimbabwe International Tourism Exchange (Zite) held in September of each year.

Kaseke said he found it very strange to be denied a visa after the European Union (EU) this week removed a trade embargo on Zimbabwe and removed most government officials from its travel ban.

“The UK seems to be operating on a standing divorced from the EU as they still maintain that I am on a travel ban,” Kaseke said.

“By virtue of being the head of tourism in the country, I am therefore the chief marketing officer of my country and it is unfortunate when I am denied participation at WTM which is arguably the world’s biggest travel show.”

Kaseke noted that the reasons given were “baseless and void” given that the UK claims to be the champion of human rights and freedom of association.

“This is not the first time that they have denied me a visa,” he fumed.

“In 2006, they wrote to me and at that time it was understandable maybe because a lot of my colleagues in both government and business were denied on the same pretext of associating with Zanu PF.

“But most have been removed. It’s surprising when I’m penalised for associating with Zanu PF which is the ruling party yet the UK are the strong advocates of freedom of association. There is nothing wrong with associating with Zanu PF because it is not criminal and anyone is inclined to associate with any political party of their choice.”

Karikoga Kaseke knows exactly why he is a prohibited person. This will be a good test for Catriona Laing to show if she is yet another ambassadorial Zanu pf bootlicker (like Aldo Dell'Ariccia, Philippe Van Damme and Philippe Van Damme) or if she is a person of moral integrity.

What's the point of appealing when the event has already started? Some people simply have no pride. If you are denied a visa to any country why would you demean yourself by begging?

@Fixcom. I'm getting tired of people who are always preaching about how rich this country is. Many African countries are rich in about the same way. Take DRC for example. The natural resources we boast about are quite useless if they remain natural and in the ground, at the same time, the people of this country and led by defunct leaders have failed to put in place, the means of turning these resources into valuable commodities. The Chinese are taking them raw at a song and if the EU come, they would prefer to do the same. However the same leaders of the failing state who boast about the riches of the country are constantly caught trying to enter so called 'enemy territories' and when denied access, it makes the news. If Zim be truly rich, lets just concentrate on making the riches count for the country and stop trips to foreign lands to seek exploitation.
