Mushowani stun Gunners

HARARE - Mushowani yesterday rose above pre-tournament favourites Gunners to land into the final of the inaugural Yadah TV Super 8 tournament with a 3-1 victory at Gwanzura Stadium.

Mushowani knocked out the 2009 Zimbabwe champions courtesy of Evans Katema first half brace before Zivanai Mhanda stretched the game beyond Gunners with a second half strike.

McDonald Donald salvaged a late consolation for Gunners but that did little to dampen the convincing result that confirmed Mushowani’s place in the finals.

The Mashonaland Central-based side will now face Ngezi Platinum, who dismissed ZRP FC 1-0 in the earlier kick off at Gwanzura Stadium.

The finals will be held on November 29 with an $8 000 winner’s prize on the line.

Gunners coach Kudakwashe Masarure was disappointed to have lost at the semi-final stage but said this would give his side ample time to concentrate on the race for promotion.

“Mushowani played well. We also played well but referees let us down because that second goal was a clear offside. Anyway we kept attacking and deserved a penalty but nothing came our way,” he said.

“Mushowani went on to score a dubious third goal which cost us in the end. Anyway God always has a purpose. We will use this opportunity to concentrate on the league.”

Gunners are currently in second place in the World Navi Northern Region Division One Soccer League, one point behind Flame Lilly.

Mushowani centre back Tellmore Sasa was ecstatic to have got one over their lower division rivals.

“We are not surprised by this result after all we have been playing well in the league. Today we deserved to win by a bigger margin because we dominated Gunners,” he said.

NRSL board member development Sween Mushonga was delighted at the response the tournament has received from the community.

“We are happy that we are seeing more crowds in Division One. People want more games and obviously we are happy to showcase the talent in the league,” he said.

“That today’s games were screened on ZTV shows that our the lower divison is growing.”
