Mugabe fingers Mujuru, Mnangagwa in factionalism

HARARE - In a surprise move, President Robert Mugabe yesterday fingered both Vice President Joice Mujuru and Justice Minister Emmerson Mnangagwa — whose nickname is Ngwena (crocodile) —  as the bigwigs leading factions in Zanu PF during an explosive Zanu PF politburo meeting.

Mugabe wants both factions investigated and will soon appoint a commission of inquiry into the factional fighting. In the process Mugabe and the politburo dismissed First Lady Grace Mugabe’s assertion that there was only one faction led by Mujuru.

In a briefing after the stormy meeting yesterday, the Daily News was told that Mugabe was asked why he had not come up with a clear succession plan which would have prevented the current vicious factional fight.

Mugabe was taken aback and reportedly said he still had not found a suitable candidate.

Until now, Mugabe’s wife — Grace, Mnangagwa’s supporters and the partisan State media had worked hard to paint the impression that only Mujuru was identified with factionalism in the party.

The Daily News was also authoritatively told that after an earlier attack by Mugabe, Mujuru unleashed a powerful presentation defending herself, leaving even those baying for her blood impressed.

“After President Mugabe’s earlier attack while addressing supporters, Mujuru was on fire and challenged those feeding the president with lies to come out in the open and face her. I have never seen that woman so vicious and articulate. She impressed even Mugabe because clearly these people are lying about her.

“She made it clear that her intention was not to remove the President. She made convincing arguments and that is why even the President has decided to probe both factions. However, you could tell that Mugabe has been arm twisted by the wife and he is being told what to say. We can only feel sorry for the old man,” said the highly placed source.

Briefing the media at the end of the politburo meeting, Zanu PF spokesman Rugare Gumbo also said the party had decided to institute a Commission of Inquiry to look into factionalism, as well as Grace’s controversial “Meet the People” rallies of the past few weeks, during which she rubbished Mujuru’s name and called for the VP’s sacking.

In addition, the politburo endorsed the suspension of under-fire Mashonaland West provincial chairman Temba Mliswa, and banned the chanting of controversial slogans such as “Down with Weevils” and “Down with Gamatox” by party members.

“We had a long discussion on the report, that is secretary for Women Affairs Cde Oppah Muchinguri’s report. We discussed and debated what was in the report ... issues relating to factionalism.

“The President was candid enough and frank enough to tell us about the factions that he has been told exist, and accordingly he will set up a commission to look into the allegations of these allegations,” Gumbo said.

Asked who the people Mugabe named as faction leaders, Gumbo said, “He (Mugabe) named the faction leaders. Mnangagwa has a faction, Vice President Mujuru has a faction and the commission will look into this.

“The debate was frank, open and at times quite explosive ...There was robust discussion into that particular issue (Muchinguri report)  that is why it led to the decision to try and set up a commission to look into that”.

Asked whether the politburo discussed the sensational allegations against Mujuru, he said the party’s highest decision-making body outside congress did not specifically look into that issue.

No names or timeframe have been given for the commission.

Gumbo also said contrary to media speculation that the party would split it was instead likely to be reinvigorated by the commission.

“We discussed the issue of Temba Mliswa and the disciplinary committee did come up with a decision. The decision is that they uphold the no-confidence vote passed on Mliswa because the simple majority that passed the decision was proved to be correct,” he said.

Gumbo ruled out the possibility of other provincial chairpersons suffering the same fate as Mliswa.

“With immediate effect no one should use slogans that are not appropriate with the party such as Down with Gamatox, Down with Chipfukuto (which are) out with immediate effect. We want slogans that unite the people,” he added.

First Lady Grace Mugabe as a citizen of Zimbabwe gave a right to report any corruption that she has seen or have heard taking place. My only worry is that she used the wrong platform. If she had sent a dossier to the AG and said I report this in my capacity as a citizen not a First Lady or on behalf of any faction it would carry water as any of us are entitled to do the same. Now if this commission is going to be professional. Even if it's true that Mai Mujuru has skeletons. The misuse of state media, and the role our First Lady took should be noted and rebuked so as to restore order in the country. If the outcome is that the Munangagwa Faction was using the First Lady I am sure he should be disqualified too. As a citizen of Zimbabwe I call upon the Lady to withdraw her praise of Munangagwa since the President has officially confirmed that Munangagwa has a faction. The issue is not to castigate one faction but factions. So the game begins.

My appeal to opposition parties: please do not spoil this delicate situation by trying to take advantage of the Zanu fights, lets leave them to cut each other's throats. No mass action , no supporting any side, let them self destruct. When they have spectacularly and utterly savaged each other then you quietly move in an take over, any external threat will unite these warring dogs. Concentrate on strengthening your parties for now, just my 2 cents worth.

So that people know..... that young legislator called Justice Mayor Wadyajena is Mnangagwa`s secret key. I used to see Mnangagwa visit lot at Wadyajena`s office at Fidelity Life Tower along Raleigh road. Mayor Wadyajena is the one who handles all of Mnangagwa`s corrupt dealings. We all know that all his monies actually belong to Mnangagwa. Please Zanu pf investigate this. That is why this Mayor Wadyajena is so arrogant.

kwazvo - 31 October 2014

I completely agree with finished because trying to sympathise with one faction will make the warring factions unite. Remember makudo ndimamwe musi wenjodzi anorwirana. Hatred and politics aside kudos to the president for instituting the commission of enquiry to investigate allegations against factionalism. If only he can personally appoint the commissioners without consulting even his shadows That commission shall unearth many irregularities and corrupt activities.

Mugabe's third way, HIS choice, is going to take over. My belief is that Sekeramayi or Gono are still going to take over.

Nduna - 31 October 2014

Politburo could disqualify both Mujuru and Mnangagwa .Sekeremayi will probably be next President. He is the only one who can unite the factions. But however,he will be defeated by Tsvangirai in elections because he is nor popular.Factions are a consequence of democracy.Let the people make their choices.Factions have always been there in ZannuPF.Remember Zvobgo versus Muzenda faction?

"he will set up a commission to look into the allegations of these allegations,” May any PhD holder please volunteer to explain to us simpletons what Mr Gumbo meant?

Johno - 31 October 2014

We are eagerly waiting for the results to be brought about by this probe to be done by the commission of inquiry team? But by the way who are the people in the team???

Mwendamberi - 31 October 2014

@People power. It is also the peoples right to probe into the so called "first Lady's" corrupt activities which are in abundance. While we are it, lets look at Kasukuwere, Mpofu, Muchinguri, Moyo, Mnangwangwa and his henchmen. No hypocrisy

connie - 31 October 2014

There should be a COMMISSION OF INQUIRY to find out how Grace got her PHD. Clearly Mnangagwa leads his faction&Joyce leads hers. There is nothing to inquire about on well known factions.HYPOCRICY! Mugabe has already taken sides. Buying time chete!!!

ED is the rightful successor to the President as he is shrewed and cunning. He is an eminent lawyer with impeccable liberation credentials unlike some of the names being floated around. He was robbed of victory in 2004 and it is time the nation rewards him.

If corruption allegations against Mujuru are dismiss it will be because the process to deal with the problem is corrupt. Mai Mujuru is corrupt because there is no other way that woman would be a billionaire otherwise! “You could tell that Mugabe has been arm twisted by the wife,” commented the source! Well Jabulani Sibanda was right then that there has been a bedroom coup! The tough talking tyrant who has often boosted of having degrees in violence is nothing but a hen pecked cock!

Wilbert Mukori - 31 October 2014

So instead of addressing the substantive issues raised by Grace the politburo has decided to set up a commission of inquiry to investigate the existence of the factions in Zanu PF. This is just kicking the can down the road; the issue is not going away and sooner or later the party will have to deal with the issue of who is to replace Mugabe which is the core issue behind all this dog-eat-dog in fighting.

Wilbert Mukori - 31 October 2014

Mr Mugabe's calculations are that he should first remove Mujuru from the VP position. Then appoint whoever is in his mind as first VP. This person becomes his successor. In the event that he dies this person takes over.Possibly, but not certainly Mnangagwa. Retaining Mujuru is a bit problematic for the president. She is the automatic successor by virtue of seniority and anyone appointed after her becomes junior as it stands. Mr Mugabe doesn't want her to be the one to takeover for reasons best known to himself. After appointing the 1st VP he will then appoint the 2nd VP from PFZapu or matabeleland. It's a ceremonial appointment, anywhere. He doesn't want this appointment to precede that of his best choice. He still plays the tribal/regional game. That is why the issue of 2nd VP is suddenly on hold. Appointing a commission is a waste of time and money. The people in ZANUPF are all interested in this factional fight one way or the other. Where will he get unbiased individuals who will make a fair impartial enquiry. Even the judges have their individual choices in this matter. If he appoints people from outside his party, he risks disclosure as this commission is not bound by national law since this is a private party matter.

The big guys who sympathized with Mujuru that is the likes of Jabulani, Shamu, Skhanyiso, Chinx, Chihuri, Kaukonde, Mutasa, and all those who went to her "doomed" graduation party should start packing their katundu. As it is ZANUPF appears divided into two equal halves but the other half has made tactical moves which give it a slight advantage over the other. I don't see any of these guys beating the old man in his game. He is good at it. As it is, it far safer to be in the streets of Hillbrow ,South Africa at night than to be in ZANUPF. There are high chances of bloodshed, arrests, disappearances, deaths, torture, humiliations etc any moment from now. You wouldn't want to be a part of this.

HONESTLY IN ANY DEMOCRATIC DISPENSATION MEMBERS ASPIRE FOR HIGHER OFFICE AS AND WHEN THERE ARE VACANCIES, WHICH HAPPEN ALL THE TIME IN ORGANISATIONS LIKE POLITICAL PARTIES AS IN COUNTRIES THEMSELVES. WHERE EVER THERE IS AN ELECTION PROCESS, CANDIADATES VIE FOR POSITIONS, AND IN DOING SO, THOSE VYING FOR THE POSITIONS HAVE THEIR OWN GROUP OF SUPPORTERS WHO GROUP AROUND THEIR CANDIDATE AND STRIVE TO GROW THE NUMBERS TO BENEFIT THEIR CANDIDATE AS THEY SEE THAT CANDIDATE AS THE PERSON SUITED FOR THAT PARTICULAR POST. THAT IS NOT FUCTIONALISM. ITS A PROCESS OF DEMOCRACY. HOWEVER, IF AN ORGANISATION HAS A STRUCTURE THAT HAS A HIGHERACHY LIKE ZANU PF, AND IS QUITE CLEAR THAT SHOULD ANYTHING HAPPEN TO THE PERSON AT THE TOP POST, THE DEPUTY OR VICE WOULD ASSUME THAT POST, IT STANDS TO REASON THAT AS THINGS STAND, IF ANYTHING WERE TO HAPPEN TO MUGABE, JOICE MUJURU WOULD ASSUME THE PRESIDENCY WITHOUT QUESTION. SO NOW, HOW DOES MUNANGAGWA OME IN TO CHALLENGE JOICE AND HAVE THOSE AROUND HIM VILLIFYING AND DENIGARTING JOICE AT ANY CORNER OR ANGLE THEY CAN GET?? THEY IN FACT ARE THE ONES WHO ARE A FACTION, BECAUSE UP TO NOW, THE PRESIDENT'S POST IS NOT VACANT, THE FIRST VP POST IS NOT VACANT. ONLY THE SECOND VP POST IS VACANT, AND THE NORM HAS BEEN THAT THE PARTY CHAIRMAN ASSUMES THAT POST WHEN IT FALLS VACANT, AND A NEW CHAIRMAN IS ELECTED. WHAT HAS CHANGED??? WHAT HAS CHANGED IS THAT MUNANGAGWA AND HIS GANG ARE NOW IMPLEMENTING REGEME CHANGE AND CHALLENGING THE STATUS QUO. THEY HAVE FORMED A FUCTION TO CAUSE HAVOC IN THE ZANU PF CAMP AND PROMOTE REGEME CHANGE. MUGABE IS FULLY A PART OF IT. HE HAS USED VP MUJURU OVER THE YEARS AND NOW HE IS DISCARDING HER LIKE A ISSUED TISSUE PAPER. IF SHE WERE THAT INCOMPETENT, AS IS CLAIMED NOW BY DR DISGRACE, WHY DID HE KEEP HER IN THAT POSITION, SINCE IT WAS HIS PREROGATIVE TO APPOINT VPS???

SHIBOBO - 1 November 2014

WHILE ZANU PF AS A PARTY HAS A RIGHT TO HAVE THEIR POLITICS AND SHENANIGANS, THEY SHOULD HOWEVER CONSIDER THE IMAGE OF THE ZIMBABWE CITIZENS AS THEY ENGAGE IN THEIR FIGHTS. THEIR CURRENT GOINGS ON ARE TOTALLY DISGUSTING AND A SHAME AS THEY REDUCE VIRTUALLY ALL ZIMBABWE CITIZENS INTO MORONS AND THE WORLD'S LAUGHING STOCK AS THE COUNTRY'S LEADERSHIP IS DISPLAYING SUCH SAVERGERY AND PRIMITIVE BEHAVIOR. PLEASE AT LEAST APRE US SOME RESPECT!!!!!

SHIBOBO - 1 November 2014

Ha ha ha, Zanu PF at it again, they even believe thier lies!... 'Mugabe wants both factions investigated and will soon appoint a commission of inquiry into the factional fighting...What investigation, what commission? He has confirmed several times that the factions destroying the party...the slogans zvipfukuto negamatox originated from him and now his not-so-smart comrades have used the slogans to put the final nail on the Zanu's coffin. Its easy to see...Mugabe will late time heal everything here...he has just calmed the storm and is waiting for congress. The plan is for Woman's league to recall VP to Women's League so that Teurai will not contest for any position. she will be 'appointed ' to one go-to-hell role and that will be the end of it. I guess VP knows this and she is also planning her next move. But Zanu will claim to follow their costitution and that is the last we are seeing of Teurai. If you cross the path of the first lady, you have also crossed the path of the president! Mukadza wa Sabhuku ndisabhukuwo inga VZVZ akareva akomana. Now they have this card displayed for all to see thier next move...all the allegations against VP are mearnt to make sure she will not break away and be a force because she knows she will be arrested! This is Zanu for you...
