Danish Trade minister expected in Zim

HARARE - Denmark's Trade and Development minister, Mogens Jensen, is expected in Zimbabwe next week to explore possible commercial opportunities between the Nordic country and the southern African nation.

The country’s embassy said Jensen — who is the first senior politician from a Western nation to officially visit Zimbabwe since the elections in 2013 — will also assess progress on Danish-funded projects.

He comes at a time the European Union is set to make a policy announcement on the restrictions that imposed on President Robert Mugabe and close allies over the past decade.

“The minister will hold meetings with senior government officials, civil society and business leaders in order to assess the needs and progress made on Danida funded programs in Zimbabwe,” said the Embassy, adding that Jensen would also look into activities and projects in the agriculture and judicial sector.

Denmark is one of Zimbabwe’s biggest bilateral development partners.

With an overall budget of $95 million, the Denmark-Zimbabwe Development Partnership Programme (2013 to 2015) aims to build democratic institutions and promote universal human rights.

Members of the Danida External Grant Committee, which plays a key role in the allocation of funds in Danish development programmes globally, will form part of Jensen’s delegation.

The purpose of their visit is to meet various program implementing partners to assess how Danish funding materialises on the ground.

The European Union is very much welcome to invest in Zim as much as they had done in the past. The removal of sanctions marks a very significant role in normalization of Zim-Euro ties, however, the issue of pending traveling restrictions on Cde Mugabe and his wife doesnt take precedence over our national survival, hence,it doesnt command top priority on our agenda as patriotic citizens and sensible Zanu Pf members
