Sata death: White interim leader appointed

LUSAKA - Zambian Vice-President Guy Scott has been named acting leader following the death of President Michael Sata.

Presidential elections to choose a permanent successor will be held within 90 days, Defence Minister Edgar Lungu said.

Mr Scott becomes Africa's first white head of state since FW de Klerk in apartheid South Africa.

Mr Sata died in the UK aged 77 after receiving treatment for an undisclosed illness.

He was being treated at London's King Edward VII hospital where he died on Tuesday night.

Mr Scott regularly stood in for the president at official events, but was never appointed acting president when Mr Sata was abroad - so this is his first time to officially lead the country.

Guy Scott

- Often disparagingly referred to as the "ceremonial vice-president"

- He was born in 1944 in Northern Rhodesia after father emigrated from Glasgow to work as a doctor on the railways

-  A Cambridge-trained economist, he entered politics in 1990 joining the MMD which won the first multiparty elections the next year

-  As agricultural minister he oversaw the recovery from a devastating drought in 1992/93

-  He joined Michael Sata's Patriotic Front (PF) in 2001

-  Appointed vice-president in September 2011 after the PF's election victory

-  As his parents were not born in Zambia a constitutional clause on parentage may nullify any attempt to run for president

In a brief televised address Mr Scott confirmed his appointment.

"The period of national mourning will start today. We will miss our beloved president and comrade," Reuters news agency quotes him as saying.

The president's death comes just days after Zambia celebrated the 50th anniversary of independence from the UK.

Cabinet secretary Roland Msiska said on national TV that President Sata's wife and son were at his bedside.

Its high time people should learn to live in peace. We had this lesson from the late nelson Mandela this is how Nations should copy from. What is the purpose of chasing away white people when at the end of the day the very same leaders would want to visit the so called countries occupied by whites. People are spending the whole day queuing in the so called Banks controlled by us Blacks just to withdraw 50 US Dollars. Is that what we call freedom. During Ian Smith time even though there was oppression I don't recall a time where people could not get things from shops and start going abroad to buy basic things for using. Is this what we fought for. The answer is No. Only a few corrupt people are enjoying life in Zimbabwe at the expense of humble citizens who cant read that these people are saying Kakara Kununa Hudya Kamwe. Even if you say mafuta angu apera they will tell you no we need some more. Regai tisvinwe mafuta ose kusvikira apera then we will know the truth and start questioning wrong things

May Mr Sata's soul rest in peace! i think we people in zimbabwe have a problem of race. Mr Sata named Mr Scott as vice president well knowing that in the event of his death he would take over. what is the big deal about being white. he is a zambian national, full stop. He may not run for president because of Constitutional restrictions, not because he is white. let us get our facts right. any citizen who is qualified and competent and is committed can be president. it is not like in our country where we keep chanting the wisdom of one person even though there is no wisdom to show for the rest of the country. 10bn in debt. plenty of mineral resources that are abused. human resources flight. unemployment. poverty even with all the farms. we cant continue to do the same old things and expect a different result. lets wake up and smell the coffee. let us be respectful of our history of sacrifice but pragmatic about decisions that need to be taken for our generation keeping in mind the future generations. Wish you well Mr Scott. Guide zambia to a credible and above board presidential electoral process

Cde Gwejugweju Simbi zinokuyana -You are the one whose mouth is rotting from the warts of servicing big black dicks. Sorry maningi. You wish you were intelligent but you are no more than a bitter racist. I dont condone Mugabe's behaviour-but I understand it-his beef was with Blair (& Bush)-in relation to policies pertaining to white owned farms in ZIM! Not towards every white person on the planet. You on the other hand...are just some piece of work. Uchizvidzorawo!
