SAA to up Zim flights

HARARE - South African Airways (SAA) plans to introduce direct daily double flights from Johannesburg to Victoria (Vic) Falls, Zimbabwe.

Aaron Munetsi, the airline’s regional manager for Africa and the Middle East, said they will commence the service upon completion of the $150 million refurbishment of the Vic Falls International Airport in the resort town.

“One of the things we have done is to capitalise on the Vic Falls as an iconic African destination. I can’t wait for the runaway to be completed or its extension to be completed, we are already planning ahead,” he said at the Zimbabwe Council for Tourism (ZCT) congress on Monday.

“We are on track and as soon as the work is finished we will start flying to Vic Falls double daily,” Munetsi said.

The airport upgrade is targeted at increasing passenger capacity from 500 000 to around 1,5 million annually and also accommodate larger aircrafts.

Munetsi noted that the South African government has over the past four years provided financial support to the tune of R12 billion for SAA to improve its operations.

The airline is currently flying once a day from Johannesburg to Vic Falls.

This comes as in July last year, national airline Air Zimbabwe (AirZim) resumed daily direct flights between Victoria Falls and Johannesburg, as it intensified efforts to reconsolidate its market share.

Walter Mzembi, Tourism minister, recently admitted that government is failing to provide financial support to revive the hard-pressed AirZim.

The carrier is currently seeking $368 million to recapitalise.

Recently, its chief executive Edmund Mukona said they were crafting a turnaround strategy that involved the purchase of modern aircraft to replace its ageing fleet.
