Mwana begins $26m smelter revamp

HARARE – London-listed resources firm Mwana Africa Plc (Mwana) has begun processes to restart its smelter at Zimbabwean subsidiary, Bindura Nickel Corporation.

The group invested $26,5 million in the refurbishment of the smelter.

In a quarterly operations and exploration update released today, Mwana indicated that post the approval to restart the smelter, preparatory work was progressing well with the core project team in place.

“The smelter is set to be restarted in the first half of 2015 and will produce nickel leach alloy,” said Kalaa Mpinga, the group’s chief executive.

Currently, key equipment orders and contracts have been made.

Mpinga noted that submission to the Environmental Management Authority (EMA) would be made later this month, adding that “financing discussions are advancing in relation to the smelter”.
