Chanakira topples Dzuwa

HARARE - Zimbabwe tennis star Tinotenda Chanakira is through to the second round of the Net One International Tennis Federation (ITF) Futures tournament after defeating Martin Dzuwa here yesterday.

Chanakira posted a convincing straight-sets win against his fellow countryman 6-4, 6-3 in the first round to book his place in the second round.

Chanakira will now face the winner between fifth seeded South African Ruan Roelofse and Michael Grand from United States of America.

“We are happy that Chanakira progressed, this is a tough tournament for our players,” Tennis Zimbabwe administrator Cliff Nhokwara told the Daily News yesterday.

“This is a very big event because we have someone who is ranked 250 in the world, this person can play in grand slam and you can see how difficult this tournament to our local players is.

“We are not expecting much in terms of our local players progressing to the finals, we are just at the developmental stage and I think our developmental fruits will be ripe in near future.”

In other matches played yesterday, France’s third seeded Mathieu Rodrigues outclassed Stefan Marunka from Croatia 6-3, 6-1 to sail through to the second round.

South Africa’s Lloyd Segal booked his place in the second round after beating Ashley Sibanda from Botswana 6-0, 6-2.

Fourth-seed Tucker Vorster from South Africa beat Germany’s David Forchap 5-7, 6-4, 3-0 in the first round while France’s Gregoire Barrere overcome Kris Van Wysk of South Africa 6-2, 6-2.

Zimbabwe Davis Cup player Mark Fynn is set to face Jordan Dyke of the US today while Tinashe Chikanda meets Victor Magin Girat.
