Chandisaita goal propels Flame Lilly

HARARE - A last minute goal from defender Brighton Chandisaita was all Flame Lilly needed to maintain their stronghold on top of the World Navi Northern Region Division One Soccer League after edging Blue Swallows here yesterday.

With the match seemingly headed for a draw, Chandisaita headed in a cross from the right flank three minutes into added time.

With the win, the Zimbabwe Prison Service side remain on top position with 61 points, one ahead of second-placed Gunners, who beat Lake Harvest 1-0 at Lafarge yesterday.

Third-placed Mushowani beat Chegutu Pirates 1-0 at Chaminuka Stadium to maintain the pressure on the log leaders. Mushowani now have 58 points.

After yesterday’s match, Flame Lilly coach Nesbert Saruchera praised his players.

“From the start we knew that the game was going to be tough but we managed to secure three points which is good for our team,” said the former Black Rhinos coach.

“As I told you before, we need to stay focused and concentrate on our game. We are now under pressure because as the log leaders everyone would want to beat us.

“I’m happy with the performance of the team this season. They are fighting for each other and we hope to continue with that spirit to the end.

“Every match that we engage in from now on will be like a cup final. We want to collect as many points as we can to stay on top position.”

Blue Swallows coach Authur Tutani was happy with the performance of his players despite the defeat.

“I think my players put up a spirited fight but I just want to give credit to Flame Lily for winning this one,” he said.

With five games to go before the season ends, the promotion race between Flame Lilly, Gunners and Mushowani is now interesting.
