Catholic Saints victorious

HARARE - Catholic Saints Under-15 team are the champions of this year’s Harare Province Junior Football tournament held at Zimbabwe Grounds in Highfield over the weekend.

Catholic Saints beat Total Academy 7-6 in penalty shoot-out to win the trophy.

On their way to finals, Catholic Saints beat Sunrise 1-0 in the semi-finals while Total Academy defeated Black Rhinos 4-2 to progress to the finals.

Black Rhinos finished on third position after beating Sunrise 5-4 in the third and fourth play-off match.

Harare Province Junior League chairman, Onias Kadewere said the tournament was a success and was happy with the competition.

“All clubs that participated were supportive by paying affiliation on time and we are very grateful to Harare City Council for providing us with fields otherwise this event would not have come to be,” Kadewere told the Daily News yesterday.

“The aim of holding these tournaments is to teach youngsters while they are still young, for them to understand the rules of the game and to promote the spirit of competition in young footballers.

Kadewere also appealed to the cooperate world for sponsorship of this tournament.

“We have no sponsors we are appealing to the cooperate world to come and support this noble idea of developing junior policy in our country,” he said.

“I also want to encourage our Premiership clubs to take junior policy seriously, if you look in the past our teams were used to produce very good players due to strong junior development.

“Also I think even currently the crisis at Highlanders has been caused by a lack of junior development, the team is lacking the Bosso culture.”
