First Lady goes after Daily News

HARARE - First Lady Grace Mugabe yesterday incited Zanu PF supporters against journalists from the Daily News, alleging that the country’s leading newspaper was being used by factional leaders to wage a war against her.

President Robert Mugabe’s wife accused the top-selling independent daily — violently and unjustly shut down by her husband’s government in September 2003 and which only returned to the news stalls in late March 2011 — of writing negative stories about her and her family.

In a move that observers described as highly unbecoming and irresponsible, Grace asked for a reporter from the Daily News to stand up at the rally, even as it was evidently clear that there were some suspiciously agitated party zealots who were threateningly chanted “pasi neDaily News” (Down with Daily News) slogans.

With no Daily News staff member obeying her command, she went into overdrive, accusing the scribes of supporting the opposition.

“Majournalists anonyepa, hameno, muchapedzerana naMwari (Journalists are liars, you will have your comeuppance with God),” she said.

“Handimbofa ndakakutukai yavamhosva yenyu vanoda kutaurawo chokwadi Mwari achakukomborerai nekuti muchamira pachokwadi. Hachizi chinhu chakanaka chekuti unoda kudya zvekuba  nekunyepa ikoko. Ipapo pakati penyu ndiudzei vanotaura zvekunyepa. Judith (Makwanya) ndiudze kuti anonyepa ndeupi. Weku Daily News ndeupi? Hona varikutarisa pasi. Group rese rakagara apa ndaona kuti ndipo pairi MDC.”

(I have seen that all that group is MDC. I will not shout at you, you will have to defend yourself to God. It’s not good to live off lies and stolen stuff. Who is a liar among you? Judith Makwanya, tell me who is the liar? Who is the Daily News reporter? They are ashamed of themselves. That whole group of journalists I have seen they are pro-MDC),” she claimed.

She alleged that some Zanu PF factional leaders held stakes in the private media, without saying which party bigwigs had equity stakes in which private media houses.

“How much are you paid for writing negative things about Mai Mugabe, $10 000? Are you happy about that? When you write about all these things about my husband, myself and family, do you really go home and have peace of mind? Do you sleep tight? I don’t think so,” she said.

Scared by the threats, some Zanu PF youths who were sitting among the reporters left the area, exposing the journalists to possible violence.

With reporters furiously writing notes, an excitable State-controlled ZBC diplomatic correspondent Makwanya, quipped: “You are still taking notes?”

Daily News ndeupi (Who is from the Daily News?)” Grace thundered further.

“When I read what you write, I say, ‘forgive them Lord, they don’t know what they are doing.’ The truth shall always be the truth. Maybe its hunger, sanctions are biting, endai kuna (Go to) Tsvangirai leader wenyu )your leader) and tell him that you are suffering,” she said.

Accusing the media of being sensational, she said private newspapers were living in darkness.

“Let’s not love money that way,” Grace said. “Shuwa unganyorere kupihwa $200 chaiyo wondisvibisa kubva wadaro? (Honestly, how can you sully me for a measly $200?).”

Without substantiating her claims, she continued: “I heard that some of the factional leaders have shares in your papers and you will not hear that because you are mere workers. They are paying you to write bad things about me.”

Commenting on Grace’s utterances, the Daily News Group Editor, Stanley Gama wryly thanked the First Lady for marketing the popular daily so openly at such a large gathering.

“It is good to get this confirmation that the First Lady, her husband and their family are such avid followers and readers of the Daily News who are enjoying our newspaper just like the hundreds of thousands of other Zimbabweans who love the country’s leading daily to bits.

“For that free advertising, I would like to thank the First Lady and wish her more happy consumption of our inimitable newspaper,” he quipped tongue in cheekily.

Zanu PF is like a snake that has been squashing but is not dead - it is not to be approached because it is deadly. Grace has done a great job shooting herself and Zanu PF in the foot but is just looking for someone to blame for it all!

Gire u must know that the bible that you purport to follow says " If you love the world you have no share in God's Kingdom, you can not save two masters at one time. So kana wada kunamata mwari siyana ne politics woita zvamwari. Kana wada politics you belong to the Devil who is Satan so u should serve him don't mix the two. Usatinyaudza uchiti mwari mwari, you are a hypocrite. Jesus even rebuked people like you.

this reminds me of 2000 kuBanket when this foolish lady asked teachers to stand up at a rally. When the Mwalimu's (teachers) stood up she said, Itwotu! Itwotu tumaticha itwotu; nditwo tunoita basa rekufundisa vana nezveMDC, tunotenga manyuzupepa eopposition twuchimwaya mumaruzevha. Muzvipfidze manzwa. Tikakubata ziva kuti 6 fit!

Bravo to the editor for his funny and appropriately sarcastic reposite to Grace's medieval thinking.
