Double gold for Daily News

HARARE - Zimbabwe's leading newspaper, the Daily News, once again scored big and dominated this year’s National Journalism and Media Awards (Njama) in Harare on Friday.

Two of the popular paper’s staff writers conquered all in their beats, emerging as the top writers in their respective categories.

Business Writer, John Kachembere won the Business and Financial Reporter of the Year, walking away with $500 as well as a laptop, courtesy of Schweppes Zimbabwe.

Sports Writer, Farayi Machamire also won the FBC Bank-sponsored Sports Reporter of the Year award that came with a handsome $1 500 cash prize and a trophy.

It was the second time that the irrepressible 25-year-old sports reporter, who is only in his third year in the industry, scooped the prestigious award following his stunning 2012 exploits.

Oppah Muchinguri, minister of Gender and Women’s Affairs, who was guest of honour at the awards ceremony bemoaned the negative portrayal of women in the media and called on journalists to be more gender-sensitive in their reportage.

She also deplored journalism which supports perpetrators of violence against women.

The Group Editor for Associated Newspapers of Zimbabwe (ANZ) — publishers of the Daily News, the Daily News on Sunday and the Weekend Post — Stanley Gama, said the latest awards won by the reporters were yet another confirmation of the Daily News’s winning journalism.

“We are ecstatic about our continuing stunning performance and domination of national journalistic awards.

“Our performance is that much more remarkable when one considers that we have only been back a short three years and we are bossing newspapers that have been in the market for more than 100 uninterrupted years!

“I want to say well done to our winners, the editorial team as a whole and all those who work behind the scenes to make us great.

“I also want to thank our loyal readers and advertisers who are ultimately the reason why we are Zimbabwe’s biggest media brand by far,” he said.

Well done to the paper for the people. Please keep telling it like it is, without fear or favour as the nation is banking on you in these troubled times.
