Promotion race wide open –Yabo

HARARE - Despite reclaiming top position in the World Navi Northern Region Division One Soccer League, Flame Lily coach Nesbert ‘Yabo’ Saruchera refused to accept the favourites tag insisting the league is still far from being decided.

The Zimbabwe Prison Service side rose to the top of the log after they played to a goalless draw with  Mushowani on Wednesday while former log leaders Gunners went down to Commando 2-1 on Wednesday.

With six games left before the end of the season, Flame Lily now top the log standings with 58 points, one ahead of Gunners.

“I am happy with our result against Mushowani but it’s still too early to talk about the championship. I will talk about the championship when other teams in the race cannot overtake us mathematically,” Saruchera told the Daily News yesterday.

“There is still a lot of work to be done. This is a marathon and we can only look at the positions at the end of the race.

“We need to stay focused and concentrate on our game. We are now under pressure because as the log leaders everyone would want to beat us.

“I am happy with the performance of the team this season. They are fighting for each other and we hope to continue with that spirit to the end.

“Every match that we engage in from now will be like a cup final. We want to collect as many points as we can to stay on top position.”

Saruchera’s side will be hoping to consolidate their position when they face Blue Swallows at Chikurubi on Sunday.

The former Black Rhinos coach warned his team to avoid complacency in their next games.

“Past results don't count and the players must approach each match as a new game with fresh challenge,” he said.

“Blue Swallows is a good team we need to put maximum effort for us to collect all the points on Sunday.”

Blue Swallows have had a very difficult season thus far and currently sit in the relegation zone, just fourth from the bottom of the log with 29 points from 28 games.
