Pasuwa skips Young Warriors trip

HARARE - Dynamos coach Calisto Pasuwa yesterday choose club over country after declining to take charge of  Zimbabwe Under-23 national football team on the basis that there was no one capable of leading the Harare giants in his absence.

The Young Warriors left for Swaziland yesterday ahead of their friendly match against that country’s Under-23 side tomorrow evening Somhlolo Stadium with Saul Chaminuka standing in for Pasuwa.

Ironically, Dynamos are currently in a heated Castle Premiership title race with Chaminuka’s ZPC Kariba with only two points separating the two teams with five games remaining.

With Dynamos assistant Philemon Mutyakureva away attending a Caf B course in Bulawayo, it appears Pasuwa does not trust goalkeepers’ coach Munyaradzi Diya and team manager Richard Chihoro to keep the team in check in his absence.

The friendly itself has sparked debate as to the pros and cons of having a friendly against side that is expected to face again in the first match of the qualifiers of the 2015 Democratic Republic of Congo Under-23 African Championships in April 2015.

Whichever way Chaminuka will handle this match, the strategy he will employ and the amount of skill he will require his team to play at, one thing is certain, it will be a tall order for the championship chasing coach.

Meanwhile, the Young Warriors’ will play Morocco on November 16 in an away international friendly match as they prepare for the DRC Championships qualifiers.

Only three changes have been made to the side which travelled to Botswana on September 30 and lost by a goal to nil.

ZPC Kariba’s duo of Tonderai Mateyaunga and Terrence Gonzo together with Pritchard Mwamba Mpelele from Hwange came in to replace Dynamos goalkeeper Tatenda Mukuruva, FC Platinum’s Walter Musona and Keith Tafadzwa Mavunga of ZPC Kariba respectively.

“We are glad that Zifa has presented us with another opportunity to assess our boys. We are optimistic and confident that we will build a strong team for the Under-23 African Championships qualifiers,” Chaminuka told the Zifa official website yesterday.
