Fynn, Chikanda in good start

HARARE - Zimbabwe tennis players Mark Fynn and Tinashe Chikanda progressed to the second round of the ongoing Twenty Third Centuries International Tennis Federation (ITF) Futures tournament here yesterday.

Fynn posted a convincing straight-sets win against his fellow countryman Miracle Matanga 6-1 6-0 in the first round to book a place in the second round.

Unseeded 29-year-old Zimbabwean will now face the winner between France’s Florentin Meynie and Netherlands’s Antal Van Der Duim, who are scheduled to meet today.

Chikanda struggled to overcome South Africa’s Rayne Roselt 6-4, 7-5 in the first round.

The 25-year-old will now meet the winner between Spain’s eighth-seeded Oscar Perez Hernandez and Croatia’s Stefan Merunka.

In other matches played yesterday, France’s Victor Girat Magin put up a spirited performance to beat Sebastian Buehler of Germany 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.

Chevaan Davids from South Africa beat his fellow countryman Joshua Chetty 7-6(4), 6-2 to sail through to the second round.

France’s Arthur Surreaux beat South Africa’s Johannes Myburg 6-1, 7-6(3) while Michael Grant from Unites States of America outclassed Japan’s Kazuma Kawachi 6-3, 6-0.

Argentina’s Matias Castro overcome Sagar Ahujah of India 6-0, 6-2 to progress to the second round.

Zimbabwe’s Davis Cup captain Martin Dzuwa will face South Africa’s Tucker Vorster in the first round today while Tinotenda Chanakira meet sixth-seeded Gregoire Barrere of France today.
