Biti, Ncube form coalition?

HARARE - Two breakaway factions from the mainstream MDC party led by Morgan Tsvangirai are set to re-unite as they bid to form a coalition with other opposition groups in preparation for elections in 2018.

The development follows a meeting of the national executive committee of the Welshman Ncube-led MDC outfit yesterday which recommended that it commences talks to unite with another breakaway faction, Tendai Biti’s MDC renewal team.

Nhlanhla Dube, the Ncube-led MDC spokesperson told the Daily News on Sunday yesterday that the meeting had noted the report that had been presented by the party’s leadership proposing the merger.

Dube said the meeting had also taken note of the need to form a coalition with Dumiso Dabengwa’s Zapu and Simba Makoni’s  Mavambo/Kusile/Dawn (MKD) project. “The party’s national executive committee met and gave the party the green light to pursue the issue of re-uniting with the renewal team and it gave the party guidance on how to go about it in terms of the modalities,” said Dube.

The latest development follows the signing of a memorandum of understanding to allow the two parties to engage in talks for a possible merger.

The unification, observers say, is meant to come up with a relatively bigger outfit to ensure that Ncube and Biti will be able to dictate the conditions for their proposed grand coalition with Dabengwa and Makoni.

The Zapu and Mavambo leaders are said to be pushing Biti and Ncube to accept a coalition of all progressive forces including Tsvangirai.

However, Tsvangirai’s former allies are believed to be hesitant to include the former prime minister whose pulling power will see him ultimately leading the coalition.

“The issue of a grand coalition would thus involve Zapu, MKD and of course the re-united MDC if the deal goes through but that has not been concluded yet in terms of implementation,” added Dube.

If the proposed grand coalition materialises, it will be a coalescence of leaders who broke away from their mainstream formations after failing to takeover power from within.

Ncube who was secretary-general of the MDC broke away in 2005 following a dispute on whether to participate in that year’s senatorial elections.

Biti who took over as secretary-general after the departure of Ncube, followed in his predecessor’s footsteps early this year after a failed attempt to unseat Tsvangirai ostensibly to give the party a new impetus.

On the other hand, both Makoni and Dabengwa are former Zanu PF stalwarts who also broke away citing among other issues, a supposed dearth of leadership in President Robert Mugabe’s party.

hahahahaha, this is a joke, this is Biti's desperate move to make sure those parties won't form coalition with the MDC-T. Of all the opposition parties mentioned, only Ncube's MDC seem to have a strong command of the electorate, the rest is just kindergarten. My advice for Ncube, Makoni and Dabengwa is to join the MDC-T that's the only serious opposition with the potential of dislodging ZANU Pf. Joining Biti's renewal team will not affect the main MDC in any greater measure, so out of the three parties contesting- Zanu Pf, MDC-T and the other coalition on paper, the latter is the smallest and you will still be forced to join one of the two parties in the event of a less then 50% vote. Point #2 is that you weigh your options before jumping into a ship.it's unwise to go against a greater opposition and you still expect to win, that's day dreaming. Wat is it that Biti is seeing now in Ncube that he couldn't see when he was the secretary in MDC-T??? Time will tell, but for Makoni and Dabengwa, join MDC-T and agree on how you will be sharing power and governance issues in the event of a win.

good biti nyika yedu yakazara nana yesmen. yes everything as long as the boss has said it. biti challenged morgan that was very good. morgan cannot be head of the party till he is 90yrs that would be wrong. zvinotanga saizvozvi zvaarikuita kurambira pachigaro vamwe vachimuti the only man. why should he be seen to be the only man in a country of 20million people? it would be interesting if the pendulum swang towards this coalition for the two big are openly in a big mess. the masses should rally behind the likes of makoni and avoid the two corrupt friends mdct and zanu. two sides of the same coin.

zvirozviyedzwa - 12 October 2014

Mafira you got a good point Biti is confused Tsvangirai is the future.

Pfutseki wako Mafira. Kusaziva kwako here kuti Tsvangirai haana kuramba kubva pachigaro, akangoti ngatiitei Congress, ivo ana Biti sezvo vaitya kudyiwa pamaelections, they were not willing to have that. I democracy ipi isingadi sarudzo, munhu ongodzi ibva iye akasarudzwa nevanhu.

Vana Biti imbwa dzevanhu. They will be always against progress

chemsoro - 13 October 2014

Dream on Biti. Why do you need other parties when you were saying you represent a large constituency. Implement your ZANU project wega. You will not succeed in your calculated maneuvers to be the next leader. You lost it big time. Pamberi neMDC-T

Only one Man can challange The Old Man and thats Morgan........

rudeboy - 13 October 2014

Biti has a very sinister agenda but he will always fail. Who really is the leader of this RENEWAL TEAM, Sekai Holland or Biti? What position does Mangoma hold in that party? How many seats does Ncube's MDC & Dabengwa have in parliament? One wonders what the proposed grand coalition of these breakaway rebels will produce.

come on biti its time to explore possible ways of become relevant in our country politics. its sounds a good idea to have a coalition. work on structures we are behind those who do not just sing praise songs to so called leaders. teach them to stick ro terms of office other than being leaders forever. mdct will never be the same strong opposition again.

zvirozviyedzwa - 13 October 2014

So, what is the reason behind the formation of this coalition? I think it is to make sure that Zanu PF - their employer, wins the elections. All they do not want is position and cheap accessing of funds from political donors - not our freedom. They are employed by Zanu PF to make sure we do not get freed from Zanu PF bondage one day. Oh lakanye safa sihlupheka - Tixo akusizwele usincede bantu.

Two failures joining hands to form a coalition. Zimbabwe has a serious dearth of leadership....

Proffessor - 13 October 2014

Form a coalition to push for the registration of disenfranchised millions of voter. the rest you leave to us

Tsvangirai only becomes irrelevant the day he loses a free and fair election. for now he is the most popular candidate by far to lead Zimbabwe to freedom and the promised land. So form your coalition around him

Kirkman - 13 October 2014

Mbiti is as useless as Welshman. Its a matter of joining clowns.

masiyambiri - 13 October 2014

As they say, CHOKWADI CHINORWADZA!! The naked truth of the matter is that MDC [in its various mutations] and Tsvangison are FINISHED!! They claim that they are still popular and were cheated of an election victory through Nikuv, but isn't it strange & illogical that they have steadily been losing by-elections to the much-maligned ZPF??!!

ZVOKWADI - 13 October 2014

ZVOKWADI is free to wish all sorts of bad luck to MDC T but that may forever remain wishful thinking.Truly struggling Zimbos prayed for a strong opposition party with a fearless, strong leader. Yes we have that now although sellouts always infiltrate the big MDC T.

BITI IS DESPERATE FOR POWER KUZAMA ZVOSE IZVO

chamutengure - 13 October 2014

Come on Biti vana yes boss ndovatirikuramba.!!Just for interest sake what progress are you talking about people. Tsvangson will never make it in politics

Bosingwa Chelsea - 13 October 2014

Who is going to lead this grouping I fore see a big fight between Biti and Ncube as both are power hungry ask Mutambara how he was duped by Ncube and Biti 's failed coup against Morgan hey another drama is on cards simillar to the one unfolding at shake shakes house. But guys you must thank Morgan for making you known had it not been for Morgan you would be still not known at all. As long as you do not come under Morgan forget of winning any political position in this country . Ncube already know that as he got zero in last elections now Biti also a zero is awaiting you .

Diibulaanyika - 13 October 2014

even if biti fails one thing that is sure is that he is not the type that reveres one person till 34 yrs lapse while they are struggling to leader the party. we want to see people taking turns to rule even their political parties. Tsvangison has become another handiende. better to rid him off so that we start a new culture in politics where incumbents learn to respect their electorate by sticking to their terms of office. mdc t is now replica of zanu therefore new ideas should be explored. we welcome the coalition hoping that they do not remain arm-chair politicians.

zvirozviyedzwa - 14 October 2014

1.) That is great but try to have the correct person to lead... do not be power hungry guys otherwise you will loose it all. 2.) Begining to campaign now before dawn lest you work up in 2018 with just ten families voting for you.

Hameno Kumba - 14 October 2014

Zvirozviyedzwa knows for a fact that Biti & co will lose everything. He wishes the same for MDC T so his ZANU PF keeps destroying Zimbabwe. It is a shame that some people love money to be used to even destroy themselves &the future of their very children.

TAPERERWA HAMAWEE - 14 October 2014

@Zvirozviedzwa, do not mislead the people, fine Tsvangirai has his own weaknesses but to expect Biti to lead us will be a big blunder that will cost us a further ten years in the wilderness. These guys were there when Tsvangirai failed to get power after pouncing pf on several occassions but as learned people they never advised the electorate and their leadership on the wayforward. Instead they were busy boasting about their educational ostentation leaving a few individuals to work for the party and busy plannining to ouster the leadership. Biti might be educated yes but has no charisma to liberate us from the firm yoke of pf. No wonder why these guys do not want to form a new Party but prefers to attain mileage using the MDC brand. Furhermore, people who are too educated are the biggest oppressors as evidenced by our current president. Saka tinovada VaTsvangirai , so far ndivo chete vane stamina to remove zanu pf.
