Wrestling champs to go ahead

HARARE - The Zimbabwe Wrestling Federation (ZWF) says it will hosts their National Championships despite a lack of support from the cooperate world and sponsors.

ZWF is scheduled to host the championships at Zozoro Wrestling Centre in Western Triangle, Highfield on October 18 but they are currently facing cash flow crisis.

The local wrestling federation has not been spared of the financial challenges bedevilling the operations of almost every sporting discipline in the country.

ZWF national coach and secretary-general, Tapiwa Masinire said: “Financial support in terms of equipment and sponsorship has been ZWF’s main Achilles heel but we are not really worried should we fail to get any sponsorship for these games because they are long overdue and we have to put a national team in place.

“18 wrestlers are in camp at the moment comprising of 11 male and seven female athletes. The national junior and senior championships will also guide us in choosing a national team that will represent the country in future games.

“This will be done in line with United World Wrestling Congress discussions to promote Olympic and traditional wrestling styles in the country.”

Masinire added: “We have however, gone on to successfully defend the removal of wrestling in the Olympic cycle 2020-2050 which is a great success for our juniors who will turn to senior wrestling at the 2020 Olympic Games in Japan.”
