Baseball decries lack of funding

HARARE - The Zimbabwe Baseball Association (ZBA) has bemoaned the lack of support from relevant authorities for the sport.

ZBA says the situation is responsible of lagging growth of one of the biggest sport in the country and worldwide.

Charles Kwangari, the ZBA secretary general, said the national men’s Under-17 team is unable to participate in the Africa Baseball Championships scheduled for the end of this month in Kenya due to lack of sponsorship.

“We were invited for the Africa Baseball Softball Association Under-17 men baseball championships scheduled for 24 to 26 October 2014 but due to financial constraints we are unable to participate at the tournament,” said Kwangari.

“18 players plus 4 officials were supposed to leave the country for Kenya but we do not have a sponsor at the moment and we are still looking for potential sponsors for the tournament.”

Kwangwari said the tournament was to be used as platform to nature talent.

“We are rebuilding the senior national teams from the juniors so this was going to be a best platform to showcase and bring light to bring light to the young talent,” he said.

He said the failure to have funds was a setback to the players who are preparing for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

“It is also a setback as we were preparing for the Olympics and 2020 baseball classics. In as far as funding is concerned we haven’t received any but the government has been supporting us and our cause,” said Kwangwari.
