'Utseya's bowling action illegal'

HARARE - Zimbabwe has been dealt a major blow after off-spinner Prosper Utseya has been banned for an illegal bowling action by the International Cricket Council (ICC).

Utseya, who has taken 130 ODI wickets in 160 matches and 10 wickets in four Tests, was reported for an illegal bowling action during the ODI series against South Africa in Bulawayo last month.

The 29-year-old off-spinner travelled to Cardiff Metropolitan University in the United Kingdom where he together with Bangladesh’s Sohag Gazi were tested by the ICC’s accredited team of human movement specialists.

Utseya is immediately unavailable to bowl in international cricket for Zimbabwe and the ban can only be lifted if he modifies his action before he can apply for a reassessment.

“The International Cricket Council today confirmed that an independent analysis has found the bowling actions of Bangladesh’s Sohag Gazi and Zimbabwe’s Prosper Utseya to be illegal and, as such, both off-spinners have been suspended from bowling in international cricket with immediate effect,” the ICC said in a statement yesterday.

“The analysis revealed that all of their deliveries exceeded the 15 degrees level of tolerance permitted under the regulations.

“Gazi was reported after the second One-Day International match against West Indies in St. George’s in August, while Utseya was reported after the third One-Day International against South Africa in Bulawayo that same month.

“Both players can apply for a re-assessment after modifying their bowling actions in accordance with clause 2.4 of the Regulations for the Review of Bowlers Reported with Suspected Illegal Bowling Actions.”

The news will come as huge blow to Zimbabwe, who are currently preparing for a tour to Bangladesh later this month.

The tour of Bangladesh will be Zimbabwe’s longest in more than a decade, as it has three Test matches and five ODIs.
