Mathe wears brave face

HARARE - Interim Highlanders coach Mike Mathe feels the Bulawayo giants are still in the reckoning for the title chase as they prepare to face CAPS United at the weekend.

The Castle Premiership action returns this weekend after a week absence that paved way for the One Wallet Cup final which was won by Triangle at the expense of Dynamos on Sunday.

Mathe, who has been Kelvin Kaindu’s under study since the start of the season, formally took charge of Bosso following the resignation of the Zambian following a string of poor results.

Kaindu stepped down as the Bulawayo giants coach following Bosso’s 1-3 home loss to ZPC Kariba which saw Highlanders fans resorted to violence in response to their team’s defeat.

Mathe feels they could turn around their season starting with the game against Makepekepe at the National Sports Stadium on Sunday.

Interestingly, Mathe was in charge of the reverse fixture between the two clubs in May which Highlanders won 4-0 at Barbourfields Stadium when the Zambian was in the United Kingdom for attending a coaching course.

“I have been there at Highlanders for a long time now. The pressure is there but a good coach is measured by how you handle it,” Mathe told the Daily News yesterday.

“The league is a marathon and we are yet to get to the finishing line. There is still 18 points to play for. There will be a lot of twist turns.

“The important thing for us is to concentrate on our team without worrying about what is happening at other clubs.

“We have agreed as a team that we have not been playing well and we start picking up points. We need to work on our short comings and correct the mistakes.

“This is one important game for us. We are working hard to ensure we pick maximum points.”

Mathe has refused to read much into the history books following their 4-0 win in the reverse fixture.

“That match is now water under the bridge. A lot has changed and this is a new challenge. We are not reading much into that game. We have to stay focused for this game,” he said.

The Bulawayo giants are in third place with 39 points while CAPS United lie third with 42 points, making their clash an important tie.

A win for either side will see them maintaining touching distance with log leaders Dynamos who have 44 points.

In other matches, champions and current log leaders DeMbare travel to Mutare for a tricky battle against Buffaloes.

Second-placed ZPC Kariba have a chance to go top of the table temporary when they take on Triangle at Gwanzura Stadium on Saturday.

Triangle are in high spirits following their triumph in the One Wallet Cup against Dynamos at the weekend.

FC Platinum travel to the capital for a date against Harare City. Platinum beat Black Rhinos 1-0 at Rimuka Stadium in their last match.

Saturday: Chicken Inn v Black Rhinos FC (Hartsfield Rugby Ground ), Chiredzi v Bantu Rovers (Chishamiso), ZPC Kariba v Triangle United(Gwanzura), Harare City v FC Platinum (Rufaro)

Sunday: Buffaloes v Dynamos (Sakubva Stadium), CAPS United v Highlanders (National Stadium), Shabanie Mine v Chapungu FC (Maglas), Hwange v How Mine (Colliery)

umm ,its good to be brave, optimistic and hopeful but the truth is that ,your team has not been playing good football of late and expecting drastic improvements is too much .Your team lacks depth and talent, who can change the game single-handedly ?

What else can he say, that is his way of thanking the executive for showing faith in him but the truth is its over for Bosso this year, only Mangwiro and Chaminuka are qualified to say what Mathe is saying cause they are still in there with a chance.
