Mutare hosts swimming gala

HARARE - A number of leading local swimmers are expected to battle it out at this year’s edition of the National Sprint Gala to be staged in Mutare on October 18.

Zimbabwe Aquatic Union (ZAU) president Marry Kloppers said the organisation is expecting a huge turnout especially by those swimmers set to compete at the African Union Sports Council Region V Games in Bulawayo.

“Swimmers from all over the country will participate and we are anticipating a huge attendance of those who are preparation for the African Union Sports Council Region V youth games scheduled for Bulawayo in December,” she said.

Kloppers urged the corporate community to sponsor the sport which is still growing.

“It’s every sporting organisation’s wish to get sponsorship like what we see in soccer and other sporting activities, for this event we don’t have sponsors so I thereby urge the corporate community to sponsor the sport which is still growing.”

The competition is going to cater for swimmers between the ages of 12 and Under and 17 and while the events will feature Backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and freestyle.

Kloppers said the winning swimmers will be presented with medals at the end of the tournament.

Meanwhile, the Water Polo Under-17 boys and girls tournament that took place over the weekend at Chisipite High School ended with Falcon College winning the boys category while St John’s College  was in second place.

The hosts emerged victorious in the girls category with Bulawayo-based Girls College coming in second place.
