Thrills set for drag racing finale

HARARE - It's  time once again to put the pedal to the metal at the highly anticipated final event of the Telecel 2014 Drag Racing Series at Donnybrook Raceway on Sunday.

The Grand Finale will be a culmination of the 2014 Drag Racing Series before this fast growing motorsport takes a break through the rainy season.

Racing fans have continued to support the sport of Drag Racing in their thousands and an impressive number of new competitors continue to join the competitor ranks, embracing the message to “Race the Track, not the Street.”

The last event of the 2014 Series is likely to see some intense action between competitors at the top of their game as the difference in elapsed times between the fastest drivers and riders continues to narrow.

Phil Archenoul is expected to be crowned fastest motorcycle of the day on Sunday on his DeWalt Suzuki GSXR with current motorcycle champion, Leslie Carlsson out of the picture for this event.

Alan Cacace is likely to remain at the top of the motor vehicle classes with his consistently performing V8 AC Cobra.

However, as with the bikes, motor vehicle elapsed times are close to call between the top cars and Terry Allberry from Bulawayo in his Cobra, Mebs Kerbelker in his Subaru WRX and Mano Zevgolis in the [hp lubes/Castrol] Toyota MR2 will all be pushing their vehicles to the max in an effort to challenge the currently undefeated Cobra.

As the now familiar top cars battle it out, surprises are expected to be the order of the day with ongoing talk of ‘secret projects’ and of course some impressive cars parading the Harare streets which would find themselves in perhaps far more familiar territory on the track with an appreciative audience.

Dragpo club secretary Susan Zevgolis said petrol heads should expect another adrenalin filled event.

“The Telecel 2014 Drag Racing Series is a public motorsport.  No previous racing experience is necessary and drivers can register at the track on the day,” Zevgolis told the Daily News yesterday.

“The Dragpro Club and its Partners (Telecel, hp lubes/Castrol, Turbo Solutions Africa, Financial Gazette, Autobusiness and DHL) welcome competitors and racing fans to this final event of the Series on Sunday.

“Racing kicks off at 11.30 am and runs through until around 5.15 pm.  Full bar and catering is available as well as entertainment for the kids.  All in all it should be a great day of racing and an entertaining day out for the whole family.”
