Maid up for stealing minister Mandiwanzira's $4 600

HARARE - Supa Mandiwanzira, the deputy Information minister, has been robbed of $4 600 allegedly by his maid, gardener and driver.

The stolen money allegedly financed the construction of the maid’s house in Epworth.

Andrew Moyo, 37, Esther Mawango, 35, Francis Mawango, 33, and Nelson Jeke, 41, appeared before magistrate Rekina Dzikiti facing theft charges.

They were remanded in custody for trial to today on charges of unlawful entry.

Allegations are that on April 17, 2014, Ruth Mandiwanzira was asked by her husband Supa if she had taken money from their bedroom headboard drawer, which she denied.

The court heard that Mandiwanzira told his wife that he was missing about $4 680 for which they searched throughout the room. After exhausting all corners, they concluded that it had been stolen.

Esther, the maid, was questioned on the whereabouts of the missing money since she always cleaned the bedroom but denied knowledge of the missing cash. Mandiwanzira later made a police report.

On September 25, detectives received information that Esther and her brother Francis had allegedly stolen the money.

The police proceeded to Esther’s rural home in Rusape and questioned Francis who said he had received the money wrapped in tissue paper from Moyo under the pretext that it was some medicine which he had to bury under a tree in Epworth.

Prosecutor Tatenda Murindagomo said Francis also revealed to the police that his sister and her other workmates had stolen the money and that Esther had bought a stand and built a four-roomed cottage in Epworth.

He also allegedly told the detectives how he was asked by Esther to dig up the parcel from the ground and count $1 000 and give it to Sikireta Bumhira to buy building material.

Upon the arrest of Esther and her workmates, they led police to Balancing Rocks Compound in Epworth were she had built her house with the stolen money.

The police should set her free, this is a small amount compared to what Supa and his ZanuPF cronies are stealing from the fiscus. Supa should explain to us why he supplied overpriced graders meant to be used in snowy countries instead of targeting this poverty stricken maid.

Two points stick out here that someone in Supa's position should never have found himself in. The first one is that of the housemaid cleaning the main bedroom. No Cde Minister, that room where undergarments are likely to be seen is out of bounds to anyone other than you and your dear wife, most especially so to an outsider such as this maid. And secondly, it is apparent this house maid had been stealing money from the unfortunate minister for quite sometime if she managed to put up a four roomed house, a lesson to you that money is not kept in drawers but in a bank as your counterpart in the Finance ministry always preaches to us. Not to say I condone what the maid did though, stealing is wrong.

@soko mukanya Watch what you write here. You are a racist, how can you say "u r not friends with indians who know no bank." You miserable creature, you should remember your gogo, street vendors and other people in the rural areas also keep their money out of banks. Wash your mouth out with jik.
