Gunners blow golden chance

HARARE - World Navi Northern Region Division One pacesetters Gunners dropped two crucial points that could have seen them stretch their lead to seven points after they were held 0-0 by Mushowani here yesterday.

With second-placed Flame Lilly suffering a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Karoi United at Chikangwe Stadium, Gunners failed to take advantage.

The 2009 Zimbabwe champions now lead the log standing with 56 points while Flame Lily remains in second place with 51 with nine games before the season ends.

Mushowani remain in third position on the log standings and trail the log leaders Gunners by eight points.

Gunners coach said Kudakwashe Musaraure was happy with a point gained.

“I am happy to get a point. It’s a good result for us as you know Flame Lilly failed to collect even a single point ,” Musaraure said after the match.

“We did not play our normal game but what is important we managed to collect a point.

Despite Gunners being the favourites to win the sole ticket to play in the top-flight league next year, Musaraure is not getting carried away yet.

“Although our aim is to win the league title this season, I don’t think we can start talking of the championship now,” he said.

“We still have a lot of work to do. This is a marathon and we can only look at the positions at the end of the race.

“We need to stay focused and concentrate on our remaining games. I told my boys not to get carried away with their recent fine performance.”

Mushowani coach Paul “Popopo” Chimalizeni bemoaned his side’s missed chances.

“I’m happy with the performance of the boys today we should have won this game but we failed to utilise our chances in the first half,” he said.

“We were on top of the situation for the whole game but we failed to turn our dominance into scores.”

Chimalezani believes his side is still very much alive in the title race.

“As I told you before this match, mathematically we are still in the title race. There are still many games to play before the end of the season and we are still aiming to win the championship.

“The right thing is that the team has rediscovered its good form. We need to remain focused and I told my boys that at this stage there is need take each game seriously and avoid complacency.”
