I wear a $10 watch: Bill Gates

NEW YORK - The richest man in America, who leads one of the world’s biggest and most influential philanthropies, keeps time with a 10-buck wristwatch.

And this summer, for his wife’s 50th birthday, Bill Gates and family headed to Austria for a “Sound of Music” vacation. Where he sang and, he admitted, wore Lederhosen.

Such true confessions came Monday morning at POLITICO’s Lessons From Leaders inaugural event, which hosted Gates as the featured guest. Chief White House correspondent Mike Allen solicited the timepiece tidbit as Gates talked about the new technologies that allow people to monitor their own health. But the other intel was revealed at the end of nearly an hour of conversation.

Gates, with a net worth that Forbes on Monday estimated at $81 billion, gamely went along with the fun-facts questions.

A couple other details: He plays a lot of tennis and recommends “a full body swing” for the best game. He reads The Economist cover to cover weekly and is finishing a new book by Henry Kissinger titled “World Order.”

But the most enjoyable read he’s had lately is “The Rosie Project,” which he picked up because wife Melinda was laughing out loud over it. According to the book’s online synopsis, it’s about “a brilliant yet socially inept professor of genetics, who’s decided it’s time he found a wife” and approaches this goal with a “a sixteen-page, scientifically valid survey to filter out the drinkers, the smokers, the late-arrivers.”

You are mad Bill, I buy lots of cars, date many models (abusing my wife in the process), gold coat my phones, spit on pedestrians from my vehicles, and the best for last, I refuse to pay my staff at my security guard firm and buy an expensive car to spite them, just to make them go on their knees and beg me. Makes me feel big, God like. you know what I mean Bill?

It is people who steal and become sudden millionaires who go about showing off expensive cars and watches. The honestly and genuinely rich don't really bother about showing off because they know that all their hard work was part of their contribution to the welfare of the world. Anybody should tell me what Zimbabwe's suddenly rich have contributed to charity or to the development of the arts or anything to do with the poor without demanding political benefits. Our rich people don't even know what an art collection is; and they are basically illiterate in everything artistic. Go to the Gates' house and you will probably find a huge collection of artistic works, but if you go to our own rich men and women, they display expensive cars and expensively imported foreign drinks which they buy to enrich foreigners while their own backyard is poor. They steal money and bank it abroad in order to develop the economies of other countries. Which European thief steals money and banks it in Africa?

I think at the end of the day anyone is entitled to buy a watch of their choice, as long as they can afford it. The worrying trend especially in Africa is that those who have ill-gotten wealth are the ones who go to extremes to flaunt their ''wealth''. And also the fact that most of these ''rich'' guys come from backgrounds of extreme abject poverty and its more like payback time when they finally ''make it''. Mobutu's outrageous five figure hair cut cost, Malema's R350k watch during his hey days, Fidza's $400k merc are just a few examples. In most cases, behind the scenes, the fundamentals of the so called wealth are rotten to the core with the guys either swimming in debt, dodging the tax man, company employees going for years without pay, looting of government coffers etc. At the end of the day its just show-boating. Africans have a long way to understanding a lot of things. The multitudes of degrees are not helping either.
