Cara-Garcia lose in final

HARARE - Zimbabwe top female tennis player Cara Black and her French partner Caroline Garcia lost the Wuhan Open doubles final to Swiss’ Martina Hingis and Italy’s Flavia Pennetta on Saturday.

Black and Garcia lost the final of the US$2,4 million tournament 6-4, 5-7, 12-10.

The Zimbabwean regular doubles partner Sania Mirza of India was not available for this tournament as she was representing her country at the ongoing Asian Games.

Black resorted to partnering with Garcia and the pair enjoyed a good run on their way to the final of the tournament.

In the semi-finals the Zim-French pair beat Andrea Hlavackova (Czech Republic) and Shuai Peng of China 2-6, 6-3, 10-7 to book their way in the final.

In the quarter-finals, Black and Garcia upset the pre-tournament favourite pair of Roberta Vinci and Sara Errani 6-3, 1-6, 10-4 to reach the last four stage.

To book a place in the quarter-finals, Black and her partner beat Klaudia Jans-Ignacik and Kristina Mladenovic 5-7, 6-4, 10-5.

In the first round, Black and Garcia posted a straight set convincing win against Alison Riske and Heather Watson 6-1 6-4.

The three-time Zimbabwe Sportsperson of the Year’s impressive display comes just a week after she partnered with Mirza to defend their Pan-Pacific Open doubles title in Tokyo.

Black and Mirza have reached five finals this year which includes the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, United States in March, the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart, Germany in April, the Portugal Open in Oeiras in May and Rogers Cup in Montreal, Canada in August.
