Shabanie hope for miracle

HARARE - Relegation-threatened Shabanie Mine will be hoping for a miracle to save their Castle Premiership status when they face log leaders Dynamos this weekend.

Jairos Tapera’s men are battling for survival in the top-flight league as they currently sit in 14th place on the log and need to collect maximum points in the remaining seven matches to avoid relegation.

Tapera was roped into the Shabanie Mine technical team with his brief being to save the team from relegation following the resignation of John Phiri following a string of poor results.

At the weekend, the asbestos miners lost 1-0 away to fellow strugglers Chiredzi FC in a match they were supposed collect maximum points.

Now the Zvishavane-based side face a DeMbare side that is charging towards a fourth consecutive title and are in danger of being steamrolled.

“We lost in our last match but the good thing is that we drew a lot of positives from that and we should be able to pick ourselves up and ensure we win our remaining league matches to survive,” Tapera told the Daily News yesterday.

“We want maximum points as much as possible. We still have a real chance to survive relegation but the important thing is we are going to apply ourselves in the remaining fixtures.”

Tapera feels their match against Dynamos provides them with an opportunity to show their character in their bid to fight relegation.

“This is a very important match for us. Dynamos are fighting for the championship and we want to survive relegation. It’s not going to be an easy match,” said the former FC platinum coach.

“We are however, in a competition and these are the type of matches that should gauge our position in the league. We respect Dynamos but we also want maximum points just as much as they do.

“They are a good team but we are in the same league. We are looking forward to a good match. We are not under any pressure to perform. We just want to play our normal football.”
