Mawungira eNharira back from Sweden tour

HARARE - Mbira legend Wilfred Tichaona Mafrika, better known as Nyamasvisva, will perform for the first time this month at the Book Café on Friday.

Nyamasvisva, backed by his band Mawungira, was in Sweden the greater part of this month where he performed at several venues during the Swedish Cultural Week.

He also gave lectures on mbira and Zimbabwean culture at Stockholm University, the country’s leading academic institution.

The founder member of Mbira DzeNharira has promised a big gig at the Book Café to celebrate his reunion with his fans.

“It is going to be a huge show, so we decided to hold it in the Book Cafe’s main venue to accommodate the throngs of people we are expecting.

“Our fans can expect a fired up show,” said Nyamasvisva in a statement released by his publicist, Innocent Fungurani.

Named after his elephant totem, Nyamasvisva started playing mbira at the age of 11.

To date, he has produced four albums, namely Mawungira, Chinamanenji, Ndodyiwa neMakava, Hurongwa and a DVD titled Nhoroondo.

He was the lead singer for the highly-acclaimed mbira ensemble, Mbira DzeNharira before he ventured on his own path in 2005 to form an eight-man mbira group known as Mawungira eNharira.
