Machel film to open ZIFF

HARARE - Camarada Presidente, a documentary on the late President of Mozambique Samora Machel, will be the opening film of this year’s Zimbabwe International Film Festival (ZIFF) which will run from October 4 to 11.

Nigel Munyati, the executive director of the Zimbabwe International Film and Festival Trust — the organisers of ZIFF — said the documentary was part of several films which have been selected to celebrate African cinema.

“The 16th edition of ZIFF is a celebration of African cinema and world-class African filmmaking,” said Munyati.

“This theme — Universal African — gives us the opportunity to engage the diversity of African film stakeholders globally, and motivate them to convene in Zimbabwe.”

Munyati, a former Zimbabwe Football Association board member for marketing, also lauded the closing film Finding Fela —  a documentary on the late Nigerian music legend, Fela Ransome Kuti.

The ZIFF director added that Finding Fela is part of a wide array of films that showcase the high quality of African pictures. “This year’s edition of ZIFF will screen a broad spectrum of international films (documentary, action, short films and animation); with particular focus on those that represent the continent positively through film,” he said.

According to Munyati, ZIFF will extend its network beyond Bulawayo and Harare.

“As usual, the other ZIFF programmes will also run during the festival. These are short film programmes which mentor aspiring writers, actors, and directors in producing short films; outreach to educate, that will screen films in the high density suburbs in Harare and Bulawayo, in fulfilment of our commitment to creating opportunities for young filmmakers in marginalised areas.

“Film Forum will offer filmmaking master classes and industry workshops that include electronic film distribution, co-production, film funding, documentary filmmaking, mini input TV, pitching workshop and the case for a film commission in Zimbabwe among others,” he said.
