Local is lekker for Miss Zim

HARARE - Miss Zimbabwe 2014 Catherine Makaya says she will use the Miss World pageant set for December as a platform to showcase quality outfits made by Zimbabwean designers.

The 19-year-old Makaya, who took over the Miss Zimbabwe crown from Thabiso Phiri following the leaking of her nude pictures, revealed yesterday that she would select about 20 designers to contribute to the wardrobe she will take to the global pageant.

“We are looking for an average of 20 designers to contribute at least one outfit each,” Makaya said through her publicist, Oscar Habeenzu.

“Her (Makaya) wardrobe at Miss World 2014 will actually be at least 40 outfits. We are looking for Zimbabwean designs which will attract the interest of people from other parts of the world. But there is need to emphasise the fact that there is need to have an international feel to the designs.”

Makaya’s publicist added that unknown designers would not be discriminated against.

“We do have ‘big’ names, but it is the personal wish of the national beauty queen to use the Miss World platform to elevate designers. Although Miss Zimbabwe will also wear international designs, Catherine will use the opportunity to exhibit our Zimbabwean style too,” he said.

“She wants to ensure that all designs she will wear at Miss World on stage and off stage, will be included in her soon-to-be established online shop for designer clothing and accessories.”

The Miss World 2014 pageant, to be held at ExCeL London on December 14 this year, will see Makaya battling against 125 other beauties from all over the world.
