Heads to roll at ZGA

HARARE - Zimbabwe Golf Association (ZGA) president Aiden Mhere has called for calm from the local golfing fraternity saying plans are at an advanced stage to restructure the executive which has been under fire for incompetence.

The ZGA executive has been the target of scorn since failing to send an e-mail to register Zimbabwe’s team for this year’s edition of the Eisenhower Trophy in Japan within the deadline.

Many conspiracy theories have gone viral from the federation’s gaffe with some suggesting Zimbabwe has been excluded from the world amateur tournament for the next 10 years.

But Mhere dismissed such claims as false.

“So far as I am concerned there is no basis for that to happen maybe if we had registered then we don’t turn up then, yes, that would have been a cause of concern,”Mhere told the Daily News yesterday.

“This is being blown out of proportion for no apparent reason. As you know for one reason or another we didn’t register the team and by the time that was about to be done it was too late.

“It was a big error. The players who were affected we spoke to them we apologised.”

Mhere admitted heads should roll at ZGA to make way for better qualified personal to prevent such things from happening again in the future.

“We are going to be restructuring and this not something that has arose because of this error. It’s something we have bee muting as far back as January when we handed the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) our constitution,” Mhere said.

“We realise we have administration weaknesses. We don’t want to mention any names but we realise we need people who are competent be it in communication, running of tournaments, public relations and so forth.

“But remember these are all voluntary positions. We are more than open to people who want to volunteer to take Zimbabwe forward.”

In the new structure, Mhere said he was open to having a player’s representative on the committee to stand for the player’s needs.
