Churchill, Girls High prevail

HARARE - Churchill High School and Girls High are the champions of this year’s edition of the Prince Edward High Invitational Basketball Tournament in the boys and girls categories respectively.

Churchill beat the hosts, who were also the defending champions, 28-30 in the final to win the title in the boys section.

In the semi-finals, Churchill outclassed Marlbourough 28-17 while Prince Edward, known as the Panthers, beat Bulawayo-based Milton High School to storm into the finals.

Girls High successfully defended their title after walloping Mufakose High 2 17-8 in the final.

On their way to the finals, Girls High beat Petra High School 14-5 to sail through.

Sledge Chinyoka, master in charge of basketball at Prince Edward, said the tournament was a success and was happy with the talent shown by the players.

“We were very excited with the number of schools which participated at this event; it gave an opportunity for government schools to play against private schools and vice versa,” Chinyoka told the Daily News yesterday.

“In Zimbabwe, outside Harare, government schools and private schools play in separate leagues unlike their counterparts in hockey, cricket, rugby or swimming who play in one league and the tournament acted as a unifying platform for all schools.

“The tournament saw a two day display of great talent and gave coaches an opportunity to assess players for this year's Region Five basketball team, which will be held at the end of the year in Bulawayo.”

Some of the schools that participated at the event are St John’s College, St George's College, Petra, Mutare Boys High, Gateway, Mufakose 2 High, Churchill, Girls High, Nagle House, Peterhouse, Watershed, Plumtree, Bulawayo Convent, Roosevelt, CBC, Gifford, Kyle College, Gokomere, Chinduduma, Westridge, Heritage, Royal College, Chipadze, Kwekwe High, amongst others.
