Chiyangwa's $400 000 wheels

HARARE - Flamboyant businessman Phillip Chiyangwa has taken delivery of his 2014 GL63 AMG, the first of its kind in Zimbabwe.

The seven-passenger Mercedes Benz utility, which cost him $400 000, was handcrafted by Marco Feeber at the German firm’s home of supercars in Affalterbach.

“Everyday we read about financial scandals… involving corporate executives and other individuals, but that’s not news. Surely, someone must spend that money (and) it becomes news if you are not the one to be spending that money (and if you got it),” Chiyangwa said.

With a top speed of 340 kilometres per hour, the two-and-a-half tonne 4MATIC is powered by a 5,5 litre V8 bi-turbo AMG engine, producing nearly 560 horsepower and 760 newton metres (Nm) of torque.

Emblazoned with the “tsivo” custom plate — the one which the self-styled empowerment guru unveiled in 2006 when he bought his S600 Mercedes sedan — the new machine has a plus 7G-Tronic automatic transmission system offering controlled efficiency, sport and manual shift for quicker responses.

At a breath-taking 0-100 kilometres per hour in 4,9 seconds, the humongous SUV can screech to a complete stop or halt at that speed in three.

Designed for ultimate luxury and comfort, Chiyangwa’s latest set of wheels is styled with many gizmos, including 360 degree cameras, night vision assist, massaging seats and temperature-controlled cup holders. The grandeur is just mind-blowing.

Apart from this, it has Artico leather seats with AMG badges to celebrate “success and its worth or value”.

With air-matic shocks costing $2 500 each — and which suspension means the car automatically lowers at high speed — it also shows its maintenance is not for the ordinary Joe. As a “pinnacle of success and performance”, the GL63 AMG is a car that holds its own against other SUVs, including the latest generation Audi Q7, BMW X6 and Porsche Cayenne.

In addition to its superior engineering technology, this unrivalled marque is a product of AMG’s “one man, one engine” principle — as it was not put together by robots, but the human hand of Feeber.

As a Mercedes-Benz car tuner, AMG has its own suspension, transmission and engine systems that are way too different from the ordinary Merc. According to Affalterbach enthusiasts, this is a car made in a facility only toured by respective brand owners or those with unit orders.

Through handcrafting, Chiyangwa’s car was meticulously built by one man, from start to finish, thus it bears his signature and the technician’s seal of unrivalled craftsmanship. In short, AMG builds performance Mercedes-Benz cars. As such, AMG calls its engineers “the greatest technicians on the planet” and by driving a car, which someone personally guaranteed in terms of quality and performance, it really makes this car very special.

Over the years, the Native Investments Africa Group founder has shown a penchant for expensive cars that is only rivalled by the likes of Spirit Embassy founder Uebert

Angel, Frank Buyanga and NMB Holdings Limited group chief executive James Mushore.

Chiyangwa’s fleet also includes a blue Bentley, Mercedes GL320, Rolls Royce and a red SL55 AMG.

Who was paid to write this story, no wonder it has no name. What are the chances that the Sundaymail also has it.Please stop making unsubstantiated claims on its being the first and even the cost of the car. Also don't forget this guy has a car rental company and is allowed to use the duty free facility introduced by government like he did with the Phatom. He is now bragging with a car which might not be costing as much and definitely not the first in the country .We expect better from you Daily News

what - 21 September 2014

Did he show the writer the payment he made to Zimoco and duty paid to government, which is in desperate need of the revenue,i doubt it.Typical of poor journalism

Laughing - 21 September 2014

Regrettably, this article is filled with factual errors, not least the absurd top speed claim and the statement that the car is built by one man. It is only the engine that is built by one man - the body is mass-produced like any other GL Mercedes! Also, reference is made to "Artico leather" as though this is something super-special. For the author's edification, Artico- leather is the M-B house name for vinyl (plastic) that the company once dubbed "M-B tex" !!

Someone watched a film on the Chiyangwa family a very long while back and he was quoted as saying "it is a gift from God" when asked about his wealth the way people hide behind the word "God" with all the dodgey deals wthey do - amazing

one vehicle is enough for the family! - 21 September 2014

This is either an advertising gimmick to let rest of us and those with fat wallets want to buy these cars or we have a serious problem of crying wolf. Wolf being there is a cash crunch.

Lewanika - 21 September 2014

Is this a newspaper or a tabloid magazine. Nowhere in the world do you get reporters reporting in a newspaper that a person has bought a new car. This paper is becoming a joke

Instead of exposing these corrupt Chiyangwa we go ahead and praise their evil deeds. Daily news is known for its stance on fairness, transparency and honesty. This time you have lost it. To the Editor of the paper Vincent Kahiya, please lead your juniors by example. We all know that Chiyangwa`s money is dirty, and for your paper to praise that .......... shame on you. Chiyangwa has taken what belongs to the country, whilst the majority suffers. Your integrity has gone the dogs

Dhivah - 22 September 2014

This paper`s integrity has gone to the dogs. You are no different to the Herald that values corrupt individuals. We all know that Chiyangwa is a rotten thief. Who cares what he is driving ....... shame on you

dhivah - 22 September 2014

Can this clever reporter also tell us how much the car will be worth in the next 3months and what our Irish chiyangwa would have benefitted by driving this immaculate beauty..I saw it it's real but making this national news means you want us to learn something so please don't take short cuts..we want to know

Zvakanaka Chiyangwa Wenjere - 22 September 2014

Nonsense! Lots of half truths in this article. Its a shame the thieving and corrupt can flaunt their ill gotten wealth in the midst of such abject poverty with the blessings and assistance of papers like daily news who should be at the forefront of exposing them for what they are

Apart from adding a few girls onto his list of women of loose morals and a couple of glances from the admiring public, of what value is this automobile? Such news is for magazines surely, not a daily newspaper.

Dr Know - 22 September 2014

Petty journalism really...derived from a poverty mentality. In other countries individuals are not named by the car they drive as anyone, including Chiyangwa, is entitled to such basics of life.

Observer - 22 September 2014

why not report on how he has failed to pay his employees over the years and his crumbling bussiness empire. This is pathetic! We used to rely on your paper for unbiased news but pane kakapihwa tumari kakuswera kachiita a**licking!

Doris - 22 September 2014

People, this writer should have checked his information, and he should have verified everything. Once the article is published, that is it, you cannot get it back. If the writer wished to appear unbiased, he should have contrasted the purchase of this expensive car against the horribly sad lives of homeless children and their families, many of whom are in dire need of housing and food. In short, he should have shown that this man is blowing money on these foolish purchases when he could earn a wonderful name for himself by giving to the poor and homeless.

In a nutshell, what have we to do with Chiyangwas life. What he decides to do with or without his money is his hell lot of a baby to feed. Now we get sick when we learn everyday that he is always at the centre of ruthless exploitation of his fellow compatriots.he takes over companies to close them down due to maladminstration, sends workers on the streets without their dues, while he lives extremely pretty. When are tiny little brains of them going to learn from the likes of Strive Masiiwa,Enock Kamushinda,James Makamba,Shingi Munyeza just to mention a few

What folks do not realise is that the $120000 for the website is for sale in that country. E.g in SA cost US170K if you add extras up to $250k. Include Zim import duty plus carbon tax and overheads to land it here it is not crazy that it will be $400k.

chiyangwa mudhara dnt hate pwzzzz.....no hard feelingz

GRAFFIX - 23 September 2014

Question that begs an answer is that does Chiyangwa pay income tax? The government needs money to run itself and income tax from this dude can help a lot. To pay $400k for a car less than half the price he has paid for it, means his income tax can help a lot to ease the burden from us poor TJ2 owners who need only 2k to get what we would call a decent wheels. I hope he is doing his patriotic duty.
