Harare mayor defends management salaries

HARARE - Harare mayor Bernard Manyenyeni has come out in defence of salaries awarded to Harare City Council town clerk Tendai Mahachi and his directors, amid reports of an obscene wage bill at the local authority.

During a consultative meeting for the 2015 Harare City Council budget,

Manyenyeni told councillors and stakeholders that as long as the job was being done, he did not care about the level of their remuneration.

“On the issue of salaries, I do not care what he (Mahachi) is being paid as long as he is delivering his services to his employers,” Manyenyeni said.

He said the salaries, which he still professes ignorance as to how much they are, are justified according to the directors’ qualifications.

Manyenyeni said since the city council is delivering services to a population of more than two million, they need the best people on the job and as such they should be paid accordingly.

“These people are being paid their current salaries because they have earned it. There should be no secrets when it comes to payments of council employees or external consultants.

“Maybe we should start by publishing how much they are paid for people to be satisfied,” Manyenyeni said.

The council wage bill has been a huge bone of contention with many residents associations claiming the local authority is over-paying its top management.

Earlier in the year, there were revelations that Mahachi and his top directors and managers were gobbling up $500 000 in salaries and allowances monthly.

The town clerk, however, refuted the claims in Parliament when asked to present the wage bill for council’s top executives.

Mahachi was later suspended for a mere 24 hours by Manyenyeni, before Local Government minister Ignatius Chombo came to his rescue and reinstated him.

Manyenyeni has also been tainted by Chombo's black brush. This is clear signs that he is feeding from Chombo's hand. Shocking to say "I don't care what he is paid?" What about the rest of the workers? So he can earn a cool million and you don't give a f*ck?

This is a misleading article. Why did you leave out the other bit where he was strongly against those who got paid big salaries an yet failed to deliver. I think the mayor was quite clear. I don't know much about the Harare mayor but this is poor journalism that deliberately fails to articulate what he said and gives the nation a wrong impression of the mayor.
