SA tour buoys Zhakata

HARARE - Zora artiste Leonard Zhakata says he was pleasantly surprised by the support he received during his recent tour of South Africa.

Last Saturday, the Mugove singer shared the stage with several South African musicians who included Freddy Gwala and Zozo at Idani Park in Limpopo Province.

“It was a real big surprise for me to hear fans in South Africa singing along to my songs,” said Zhakata.

“Before the concert, we wrongly regarded ourselves as the underdogs of the concert but we quickly discovered when we went on stage that we were actually the crowd’s favourites. This was very humbling because Freddy Gwala and Zozo are big names in South Africa.”

After the rousing reception across the Limpopo, the 46-year-old artiste, who toured South Africa and Namibia four years ago, is now keen to make more shows in neighbouring countries.

“Receiving such great support away from home really encouraged us and lifted our spirits and because of that we are really keen to tour outside Zimbabwe more regularly. We intend to tour South Africa again in October this year for concerts in several cities including Johannesburg and Cape Town,” he told the Daily News.

Zhakata first rose to national prominence two decades ago with the hit Mugove off the blockbuster album Maruva Enyika.

He solidified his position as one of Zimbabwe’s most popular musicians with highly-acclaimed albums such as Unochemei, Vagoni Vebasa, Upenyu Mutoro and Nzombe Huru.

Originally from Rusape, Zhakata, who grew up in Harare’s high density suburb of Glen Norah, wrote and composed all-time hits like Moyo Muti, Yarira Mhere, Tungidza Gwenya and Shungu Dzemwoyo.
