TZ to host ITF tourneys

HARARE - Zimbabwe is set to host two International Tennis Federation (ITF) Futures tournaments next month.

The two tournaments are scheduled for October 13 to 25, with the first tournament sponsored by Twenty Third Century while the second will be sponsored by Net One.

The ITF Futures circuit is the lowest rung of professional tennis below the Association for Tennis Professionals (ATP) Challengers Tour.

Tennis Zimbabwe administrator Cliff Nhokwara said they have started preparations to host the tournaments.

“Preparations are going on well to host these two tournaments. It will be very beneficial to our players as they earn points and some of them do not play in the qualifying rounds,” Nhokwara told the Daily News yesterday.

“We expect a number of top players to grace this tournament. Hosting the tournaments is not only a great advantage to the players, but will also boost the country’s image.”

Zimbabwe failed to host the Twenty Third Century last year after disagreements of dates between sponsors and ITF.

In 2013, Zimbabwe  top tennis player Takanyi Garanganga won the tournament after beating South Africa’s Keith Crowley 6-3, 7-6 (8) and walk away with $ 1300.

The US-based tennis star was dominant throughout the seven days of the tournament; he beat South Africa’s third seed Ruan Roeflose in the semi-finals before beating Crowley to clinch the title.
