Cricket Academy for Gweru

GWERU - Midlands Cricket Association (MCA) has launched an Academy aimed at developing the game from the grassroots.

MCA is working in conjunction with Kindle Cricket Academy with the venture set to breathe life into the sport in the midlands capital of Gweru.

Kindle Cricket Academy has since begun holiday sessions for school going children, although the response has been somewhat discouraging.

“At the moment the response has been somewhat underwhelming, but we are happy with the group that we have,” the academy’s founder, Charles Office told the Daily News.

Office said the academy’s short term plan was to build enthusiasm amongst young cricketers and get guardians to believe in their vision.

“We would love to see many girls and boys involved in the academy,” Office said.

Kindle Cricket Academy is currently holding training sessions at Gweru Sports Club rugby field, although the training facilities are not suitable for the youngsters.

“We are faced with a number of challenges, mainly lack of proper training facilities. We are canvassing equipment as we anticipate growth in numbers of junior cricketers,” he said.

Office says he is driven by passion for the game which has since dropped in support and junior development over the years, resulting in Zimbabwe failing to produce fine cricketers like in the late 90s.

The game has also suffered from lack of corporate support and grassroots development which has resulted in the national cricket team failing to beat Associate teams.

“Gweru seems to be lagging behind in terms of sport and we feel we can make a contribution to the community and hopefully it can impact the community,” said Office.

“We are yet to partner any business for sponsorship, however we are looking forward to partnering any individuals or businesses that share our values.”
