Mavhaire blasts resettled farmers

HARARE - Resttled farmers should take responsibility for the country’s economic collapse because they failed to utilise allocated land, Zanu PF secretary for production and labour said last week.

Dzikamai Mavhaire, told resettled farmers at a Star Field Day in Marawa Community, Chinhoyi West, that most of the country’s strategic economic branches were dysfunctional because they failed to utilise the land they received from the government during the Land Reform Programme in 2000.

“Cold Storage yekuChinhoyi haisi kufamba zvakanaka nekuti n’ombe hakuna. Isu takatora mombe Cold Storage kune n’ombe. Saka avharisa Cold Storage ndiyani kuona kwenyu? (The Cold Storage Commission (CSC) in Chinhoyi is not fully functional, but when we took the farms there were cattle at the CSC, so in your opinion who led to the closing of the CSC?)” Mavhaire said.

Mavhaire blasted the resettled farmers for the high unemployment rate the country is struggling with, saying their “laziness was causing unemployment.”

“Kwahi Viva, minda takatora! Nyika tisu, iwe uchifamba uchivharisa industry? (You say Viva, we took the land! We are the nation, when you are closing industries?)” said Mavhaire.

He told farmers that they had to supply grain to the Grain Marketing Board (GMB) in order for the country to sustain itself in case of a drought.

“Vamwe kana vakohwa vanoendesa chibahwe kuGMB kuti kana paita zhara toona chibahwe tipe vanhu. Iwe tore chibahwe wopa Chibuku vanhu newe modhakwa. Kana patangwa kushaikwa chibahwe wotitarisa, unoti tinochitorepi chibahwe? (Some sell their grain to the GMB, so that in drought we can give people, while some of you sell to Chibuku for brewery purposes. When there is a drought you then look to the government to provide the grain. Where do you think we can get the grain?)” he said.

The minister said farmers should not expect president Robert Mugabe to wonder all over the southern African region asking for grain because he had done his part through ensuring black Zimbabweans occupied fertile land.

“Iwe kutuma VaMugabe kuti endai Malawi kunokumbira chibahwe? Ivo vakakupai minda yokuti murime tosimuka kunokumbira chibahwe? (You now send the president to Malawi to beg for grain, when he gave you farms so that you can produce food, now you expect us to beg for grain?” the politburo member said.

This comes as the economy is slowly sliding into recession characterised by low aggregate demand, deflation, acute liquidity crisis and massive company closures.

Despite the farm allocations, Zimbabwe has a huge import bill, 70 percent of which are consumptive imports.

Economic analysts cite the controversial Land Reform Programme, which displaced white farmers as one of the reasons the economy is in doldrums.

The 'jongwes' are coming home to roost. At least Mavhaire has the courage to place part of the blame where it belongs. I say part because Mugabe's government is mainly responsible for the country's decline.

Mavhaire is part of the equation that has and will fail this nation

Mavhaire is just singing for his supper, notice how he just throws in Mugabe's name unnecessarily. I thought he was the energy minister, why should he address villagers and talk about maize production and not power generation or some other related matter? With such clueless Ministers, we sure sure are heading for doomsday.
