IM Makoto shines in Norway

HARARE - International Master (IM) Rodwell Makoto left an indelible mark at the Chess Olympiad held in Tromso, Norway earlier this month.

The Olympiad hosted some of the world's best chess playing nations but Makoto proved his worth finishing with a credible 8/11 points in a star studded field on board two.

That performance was reminiscent of the form which saw him win gold in the Capablanca Chess Festival in South Africa in 2012 before coming first in the South Africa Open, where he beat grandmasters from China and France.

Meanwhile at a tournament held at Causeway earlier this month,   DIon Moyo emerged the winner of the men's nationals in the absence of Makoto, Emerald Mushore, Castro Sibanda and Spencer Masango who were on national duty in Norway.

Elisha Chimbamu was second with 6, 5 points, half a point behind Dion Moyo, the winner.

Elisha Thabo and Lloyd Moyo were tied on third position with six points. Ronald Chimanzi found the going tough and he scored only half a point.

In the ladies section Valentine Pasipanodya was the best lady with a perfect score of nine out of nine games.

Linda Shava was the second best with seven points followed Bridget Pumuyo with 6, 5  points. Refiloe Mudodo had 1, 5 points.
