Man up for robbery, indecent assault

BULAWAYO - A 37-year-old man allegedly undressed a woman and indecently assaulted her in front of her husband and father-in-law during a robbery, a magistrate here heard.

Mvelo Sibanda of Hillcrest pleaded not guilty to two counts of indecent assault and robbery when he appeared before regional magistrate Sikhumbuzo Nyathi.

He was remanded in custody to August 29.

It is alleged that on May 17, Sibanda worked in connivance with four others who are on the run. Armed with iron bars, they proceeded to the messenger of court offices and gained entry through illegal means.

Sibanda confronted Tedias Dambudzo, a security guard, and demanded to be shown the safe.

When Dambudzo professed ignorance on the whereabouts of the safe, Sibanda threatened him with death before striking him several times with an iron bar.

While Sibanda kept vigil at the door, his accomplices allegedly broke the window on the northern side of the main offices, cut the burglar bars, before gaining entry. They proceeded to an unused safe and opened it but found nothing.

They then cut the padlock  to the screen gate, forced open  the door to the main office before proceeding to the safe  which they forced open and took $14 674, the court heard.

While the accused kept guard of the room into which he had forced Dambudzo, Roseline Ncube and three children, he threatened to rape Ncube. He allegedly sexually violated the woman in the presence of her father-in-law and her husband.

A report was made to the police leading to his arrest.
