Magaya case: Woman speaks

HARARE - Prophet Healing and Deliverance (PHD) Ministries leader Prophet Walter Magaya’s adultery charges have taken a new twist after the woman alleged to be having an illicit affair with the celebrity preacher dispelled the claims.

This comes after Denford Mutashu filed a lawsuit against the popular prophet, demanding $500 000 in adultery damages from Magaya for allegedly having an affair with his wife, Memory Nomsa Ruvazhe.

Mutashu has also filed criminal charges against the prophet, accusing him of bigamy and making death threats against him.

But in a July 30 affidavit seen by the Daily News, Ruvazhe strenuously denies having an affair with Magaya.

She claims that she began having problems with her husband after she visited Magaya’s guest house in Marlborough, where she stayed for three days seeking spiritual guidance and divine healing.

Mutashu claims Ruvazhe was cohabiting with Magaya for the three days and the prophet was having an inappropriate sexual liaison with his wife.

“When I returned from the guest house, I started having problems with my husband with him accusing me of being in love with the prophet,” Ruvazhe said in the affidavit.

She said she tried to explain to her husband the nature of her visit to Magaya but Mutashu refused to buy the explanation.

Mutashu is said to have persisted with his claims. He has since filed a High Court application through his lawyers Mugiya and Macharaga Law Chambers, in which he is demanding
$500 000 in adultery damages.

He lodged a court application after claiming his earlier letters of demand were ignored by Magaya.

According to Mutashu, the alleged adulterous affair had seriously affected his personal health to the extent that he had to take bed rest due to excessive stress caused by loss of affection. But his wife insists the adultery claims are false.

“I wish to place it on record that I have never been in a relationship with Prophet Walter Magaya nor am I in any form of relationship with the prophet,” the wife said in the affidavit.

“However, of late my husband seems to have devised a plan to extort money from Prophet Magaya based on his false allegations.”

The woman said her husband had indicated to her that she should publicly confirm that she was having an affair with Magaya.

“He indicated that by so doing, he would be in a position to claim adultery damages from the prophet,” Ruvazhe said.

“He also indicated to me that considering the popularity and reputation of Prophet Magaya, he would then pay us a lot of money.”

She said in the affidavit she refused to go along her husband’s devious plan, which she branded an “evil scheme.” She said she did not want to destroy Magaya or his ministry by peddling malicious lies.

“I have resisted all efforts by my husband to falsely accuse Prophet Magaya to be in an adulterous affair with myself,” Ruvazhe said.

However, Mutashu’s lawyer Norman Mugiya insisted on his client’s claim and confirmed that criminal charges had also been filed against the modest-but-hugely-popular prophet.

Mugiya claims his client is traumatised after allegedly receiving death threats from senior police officers, who are linked to Magaya’s PHD Ministries Church.

“I can confirm that there is a criminal report made with the police against Walter Magaya for bigamy and the police are handling the matter,” Mugiya told the Daily News yesterday.

“However, my client is worried that he is being victimised by some senior police officers, who are members of the accused’s organisation.

“We have some of the names of the police officers who are now acting as the accused’s agents to victimise my client so that he is shut out.”

In their High Court application, the lawyers claim to be in possession of love text messages and a printout of a mobile phone communication between Magaya and Ruvazhe.

Something is off here. There is evidence of text messages and there is a printout, nit to mention the recorded admission by Magaya and then there is the car bought for the lady. Surely Magaya was acting not according christian doctrines

When you went away for three days to the lodge, was your husband in agreement with the arrangement? that is the key issue that you must adequately address otherwise what you are saying is neither here nor there.

muzimbo - 20 August 2014

It is always suspicious that a married woman can vanish from home and her husband for three days without the hubby knowing where she is. If that is what is called spiritual healing, I think I will have none of it. Even self-made prophets should respect the sanctity of marriage and respect other people's wives. In the first place, did she discuss her 3-day visit and stay in Magaya's lodge with her husband? Why did she go there alone, with the prophet minus the husband? Did she reveal how this 'spiritual healing'actually happened? Did she by any chance receive presents from Magaya and in what form? And was there some material gifts such as cars and cash exchanged between her and Magaya? In the final analysis, people should know that Zim is undergoing lots of economic problems. This means lots of 'prophets' will mushroom, and the stresses that people go through can easily lead to women being victimized by the new breed of 'prophets' who relish the poverty people are facing and use it for their own advantage.

This woman seems to be defending her lover Magaya. First she must tell the world if the reasons of her going for the spiritual deliverance were known to her husband. Were they having any major problems that triggered the need for deliverance. What is her comment on the text messages she exchanged with Magaya? How about the Mark 11 car, can she explain when and how she got it. If she explains all this, then we can buy her story a label her husband a fortune seeker.

PHD has guest houses used for cases like these where many believers go for help from situations such as this husband's case. In the end the truth comes out i just hope he is not lying. If he is it will haunt him and bring a curse into his life until he repents. The guest house is just along the lines of Musasa Project's houses only these are for prayer from a Prophet with congregations of 100 000 people. I however remind all you who like to post things particularly against so many of the prophets of 2 Chronicles 36:19 " The Lord God ........continued to send prophets to warn his people, because he wanted to warn them....." 16. "But they ridiculed God's messengers, ignoring his words and laughing at his prophets until at last the Lord's anger against his people was so great that there was no escape"

peter juta - 20 August 2014

The prophet needs to jealously guard his reputation by willfully avoiding keeping spouses away from their partners without prior consent; all for the "divine" sake of spiritual deliverance. It is out of order and surely there must be some lawyers in the PHD to give legal counsel to this young preacher? On the other hand, Mutashu's lawyer needs to give us a clearly defined legal definition of what constitutes "bigamy." My own definition seem to be the very opposite of his and ironically I understand it is his client who is closest to a bigamous relationship with his harem of 3 (or even more) wives!

Chenjerai Hove, do any members of your family go to church at all? Do you accompany them to each and every church program or conference to make sure you keep away the pastor/prophet/minister etc. from them? Has anybody ever prayed for you over a sickness or problem and God unambiguously healed you directly through that prayer?Does God ever talk to you in your heart, mind or dreams? Do you know that adultery does not exclusively occur with prophets? Do you know that it also occurs at your wife's workplace, your daughter's school, at the butchery where your wife buys meat, all this in your absence? Even your wife's best friend can also be your victim. So people do not need to be prophets to lure women into affairs. You should suggest accompanying wives everywhere where men can be found? Most truly all adult female members of your family have received gifts (in any form, as you say) which they will never reveal to you if you are paranoid.

So where does Prophet Magaya fit in this scenario, he doesn't do the bookings, the wife is the only person who knows why she didn't inform the husband on her whereabouts, maybe or rather from the look of it in this article there is always a communication problem in that house. I really wonder if these two are happily married.

Slivia - 20 August 2014

This is the spirit of antichrist at work. “From the day of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of God suffers violence and the violent shall take it by force”. Show me any man of God who was mightily used by God, who walked in the demonstration of the power of the Spirit who was not falsely accused. The Bible says Jesus did many more signs and wonders which are not recorded in the Bible but they went on to crucify Him. Even in the Bible times true Prophets of God were persecuted. People of Zimbabwe and it's media we need to repent from this evil practise. God is watching how we treat His servants. Although God loves Israel but because they denied Christ for now its like He has abandoned them and dealing with us.

Veduwee, regai kutaura zvamusingazivi. I have a personal experience of a three day stay at the PHD lodges. When you make the booking, you do it through the email or you fone to one of the numbers and staff at PHD attends to you. You will then register and registration is done at the church through the PHD staff on the day you move in and the prophet is not involved in all these. Surely when one does the booking on the fone or on email, won't the PHD staff be asking for too much if they have to ask you whether you are married or not or whether you are bringing your husband etc. When you are making a booking to the lodges, you obviously have some spiritual issues and you need assistance from the Prophet irrespective of your marital status. Surely whether your husband and or wife knows it or not is not the business of the Prophet. imagine the staff at PHD having to ask for your spouse's number to verify whether they know of your whereabouts etc, it is surely non of their business. In any case, you only see the prophet one on one at the end of the visit and this is done at the church premises not at the lodges. Every week, thousands of people book for three days to stay at the lodges. Each guest house takes upto 80 guests at a time. Each room has a minimum of six beds and they are all like dormitories where only people of the same sex stay in each room. Even married couples do not stay together. The prophet does not meet guests at the lodges individually, all guests whether local or international will meet the prophet at the church and the one on one meetings are done in the church premises. It is mere ignorance that people are just commenting on things they do not know. I cannot judge, lest I be judged my self, however the truth shall come out, if this complainant is a fortune seeker, shame on him!!!!

The guest houses of phd are meant for foreigners who would want to meet the prophet. but any local person is allowed to visit the guest house as well. By one on one it doesn't meant you will be alone with the prophet. you will be talking to the prophet infront of other people. they onli say its one on one because you will be talking to the prophet otherwise there is no special arrangement. i have been there. the advantage is that the prophet will deal with all your problems yu tell him all unlike in a congregation where he js says come out. it onli takes those who have been there to understand.

@ Chengerai Hove, for someone to come to church, there is not interview that has to be done to every woman, every child even every husband. It is not the responsibility of the ministry or the prophet to ask whether anyone is in agreement with the family in terms of coming to church. This is the same as when someone is going to a beerhall. A husband cannot ask a beerhall manager on why his wife was in a bar? To comment about the guest lodge. Any adult who is above the age of 18 can go and register and fill up the necessary bookings for the use of the guest lodging. Just as any other hotel or lodge should not be asked on why they allowed anyone to book or whether any woman or husband has confirmed with the spouse. However still on the matter, the guest houses for PHD Ministries hearded by Prophet Magaya has a more like dormitory set up. People do not have private rooms where one person stays alone, they stay in groups for prayer support and all. As for the one on one meetings advertised. People are attended to as a group in an open church, only that a person will have his or her issues dealt with for not more than two - five minutes in total. Therefore let Nomsa speak her truth.

Where there is smoke there is fire.If this so called prophet is connected in this issue it cannot go unnoticed because out GOD is not a GOD of confussion.Let him look where Gumbura is and he had tried all tricks and failed but if he repents GOD forget his sins in the sea of forgetfulness. If he thinks money and his connection with top police officials will protect him but if he is guilty GOD has no barrier. You people who are just quoting Bible verses don't play around with the Word of GOD.Dont compare these men with Bible prophets because even if they were accused and killed it was not because of adultery but it was because of the true Word and they even were against women immorality but these modern so called prophets are taking advantage this immorality to lust after them. These are not prophets but fortune-tellers.

Diibulaanyika - 20 August 2014

If people are guided by the bible then we wont be having all this mess. The problem is people respect or fear a prophet more than God and the bible. A prophet is just a messanger. In the bible Jesus never lodged people in guest houses for spritual assistance.God does not need to put people in three day of solitary cinfinment to deliver them. He is God, he is not a man. That why he is called God. In any case can someone biblically define spiritual assistance? Juses haelled poeple instantly there and then period. Now even with that prostitute at the well he said GO AND CALL YOUR HUSBAND! that does not matter to our so called prophets. Verengai mabhaibheri enyu muerege kurasika.

I'm in total agreement with what Chenjerai Hove said. A woman can not just up and leave her home and husband to be a prophet's guest for three whole days and nights. There's something fishy there, and what of all the evidence in the form of that car she received and the text messages, that can not be dismissed. Profiteering prophets are mushrooming everywhere these days and they are taking advantage of the economic hardships we currently face. Where were they when the economy was not this bad, when people had jobs and less stress? We need to pray to God through Jesus Christ His Son and not these self proclaiming men of God who are just out for their own enrichment. I suspect this woman was threatened or was offered more money to protect this Magaya. This is yet another Gumbura case, watch this space.
