Lock, Dzenga win ITF doubles

HARARE - Zimbabwe top junior tennis players Courtney Lock and Nicole Dzenga clinched the ITF South/Central African Junior Circuit doubles in the boys and girls category respectively here yesterday.

Lock patterned with Ivory Coast’s Gueninhle Abdoul Karir Quattara to beat the South African pair of Damon Kesaris and Rhys Milne 6-1, 7-5 in the finals.

In the semifinals, the pair of Lock and Quattara beat Paramatmuni Venkata of India and Tidimane of Botswana 6-4, 6-4 to storm into the finals.

After the match Lock was delighted with their win.

“I am very excited to win the doubles, it is good for our country,” Lock told the Daily News after the event.

“I think the tournament was very tough, our local junior players must continuously participate in this type of tournaments if we need to improve as a country.

“Our opponents gave us a good run especially in the second set. They had a couple of good volleys and made some really good saves. It was not like a stroll in the park,” added Lock.

In the girls category, Dzenga patterned with South Africa’s Theresa Alison Van Zyl to beat South African pair of Katie Poluta and Neadin Deviliers 6-4, 2-6 10-8.

In the semifinals, Dzenga and Zyl beat South Africa’s Lee Barnard and Zani Barnard 6-2, 2-6, 12-10 to sail through to the finals.
