CAPS Under-13 clinch Harare title

HARARE - CAPS United Under-13 team are the champions of this year’s Harare Province Junior Football tournament co-hosted by Prince Edward and Eland Junior School.

The Green Machine junior team beat Black Mambas 1-0 to win the trophy in the final.

Eighteen teams from the Harare Province Junior League converged at the two venues in three groups of six teams each in the first two days before the last eight, the semi-finals and the final on the last day.

Junior league secretary general Tonderayi Ndiraya told the Zifa website that the league holds such tournaments once each season for all age groups the Under-13, Under-15 and Under- 17.

“All clubs that participated were supportive by paying affiliation on time and we are very grateful to Eland Junior School and Prince Edward for providing us with fields otherwise this event would not have come to be,” said Ndiraya.

“The aim of holding these tournaments is to teach youngsters while they are still young, for them to understand the rules of the game and to promote the spirit of competition in young footballers.

“It is however sad to note that cases of age cheating continue to sprout in our game, some players had to be suspended in for that.”

Dynamos assistant coach Philemon Mutyakureva implored Zifa to do their best in securing a sponsor for the junior league to give the children something to play for.

“Junior football is not that demanding, these kids just need a little motivation, they are not paid but they play out of passion,” Mutyakureva told the Zifa website.

“Since morning they have just eaten bread because in this harsh economic environment, clubs cannot bear the burden considering that there are expenses to be settled in senior teams,’’ he said.
